It’s almost like there’s this underlying, unspoken concept in metropolitan Canada amongst the well-to-do that criminals who have no regard for human life or indeed the laws simply do not know any better and to be “Canadian” means we have a duty to tolerate and accommodate to our own detriment.
Everyone is either a victim of circumstance, a product of an oppressive system or a result of some kind of trauma. Are there people out there who can trace their suffering to these things? Yes, absolutely. I don’t mean to suggest that life isn’t nuanced. It just seems that people go to extraordinary lengths just to avoid having to acknowledge that there are bad, fucked up people in this world and that no amount of therapy, rehabilitation or gun control is going to change that.
Sometimes there isn’t some grandiose reason why someone would hurt others. Sometimes there is, but most times, you can see it coming from a mile away. These usually aren’t good people that woke up one day and decided to be evil. These are usually people with issues and incidents that span over their whole lives. This isn’t something that gun control is going to magically fix. You can’t fix behaviour by simply removing an object from someone’s possession, and you’re certainly not going to fix it by removing something from the possession of someone who doesn’t deserve it.
We had a system that dealt with this a lot better. It wasn’t perfect, but there was a time when headlines like this didn’t exist. Guess what? That system didn’t include sweeping gun bans.
When you have agents of foreign interests operating AND harming people with illegal firearms on Canadian soil on a daily basis to the extent that it’s just become part of the daily news cycle, then quite frankly you have bigger things to worry about than clutching your fucking pearls over Uncle Joe and his clapped out M1 Carbine.
“B-but assault weapons! Nobody needs those!!!”
Like, give your head a shake dude and look at the fucking news on any given day. It’s drug wars, it’s gang wars, it’s political violence from extremist groups, it’s gun smugglers and thieves. It’s not some Ned Flanders-ass dude with a gun license, nor is it some sport shooter from New Brunswick. It’s not some hunter from NL or some octogenarian who can’t walk from here to there without an inhaler.
People are completely ignoring what’s happening and instead seem more concerned about things that personally annoy them on an ideological level because they are, at heart, deeply and terribly intolerant people who carry a massive chip on their shoulder and if that’s not bad enough, they’re perfectly fine with billions of tax dollars being funnelled into a dead-end low yield project that could have been better spent doing literally anything else.
This whole charade is nothing more than a pathetic, long-winded attempt to correct a “cultural” issue that bugs the shit out of the upper-class while desperately trying to frame it as a necessary public safety initiative. The philosophy of arrogant, self absorbed, wealthy and intolerant cosmopolitan clowns and pseudo-intellectual idiots being imposed on people who are guilty of the crime of offending the sensibilities of people who live a completely sterile and sheltered existence by partaking in an otherwise clean and sensible lifestyle.
Nothing that’s currently happening in the gun control scene is of any appreciable benefit to public safety. The firmest launchpad for this whole thing happened in 1989 which resulted in a Firearms Act re-write. Almost every shooting since then exclusively involved people who were known to police, had either been reported or were of concern to people around them. An upsetting number of them were reported to the police and the police and/or the courts completely shat the bed. It was left up to the system to do its job and guess what? The system failed repeatedly.
And now they want to expand the system by banning all these guns from some of the tamest people in Canada. Why? So it can fail more? So they can be given some useless enforcement tools? We can’t even stop people with lifetime firearm bans from getting ahold of illegal guns, much less lock them up and now we’re going to be rounding up millions of these guns? Give me a fucking break.
