Just grabbed this SKS after receiving my PAL. They said they just got it out of the crates and it was covered in cosmoline(which took some time to clean but ready to shoot now). Lots of marking on it that I’m not sure if they are from factory. Is this a genuine Tula SKS. Is the stock color normally this dark? Did I do all right?

All those markings appear factory to me, make sure to get all the cosmoline out of the barrel and the gas system so it runs right and to avoid malfunctions!

I'm a newbie...

Isn't cosmoline stuff they put on new guns for extended shipping? Wouldn't an old beast like this be devoid?

Military surplus rifles get absolutely caked in cosmoline to preserve them. As they sit for many decades

Yes they do but it's usually more of a thin oil coating to prevent corrosion. Old military rifles like this one in the post were packed in a thick grease (cosmoline) after production to preserve the rifles until they are needed to be used. Unless this rifle has had a previous owner that has already used it, it will be packed with grease that needs to be cleaned out to prevent malfunctions and in a sks possible slam fires.

Edit: there are lots of videos online to assist with disassembly and cleaning of popular military surplus rifles if you have one yourself

Congratulations!

You appear to have got a blued barrel instead of painted, and personally I love the dark red coloured stocks. She is a beauty!

Set up your phone behind you the first time you go shooting and watch how far it chucks the empty casings. Someone a while back posted a photo of a casing slightly embedded in a roof rafter lol.

The top cover will tell you for sure but that’s a Tula mark on the stock. 1954 means it has a chrome barrel which is good! All those factory marks are proofs from when they built and inspected it.

Yeah these stocks usually have a darker reddish finish, you can always sand it down and restain later if you want. Enjoy!

That is a nice first rifle. Good job

Now get the obligatory Chicom Type 56 Chest Rig and about 40 stripper clips along with a sling and you should be good to go.

Mine is very similar, same year, same markings but slightly more beaten up than yours. I've had mine for 12 years and i still love it. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I still love mine.

Lower mainland bc? I think cleaned it few days ago for the store I work at, 54 non refurbish all matching. I’m not gonna lie it’s a fair market price but it’s hard to find non refurbish all matching Russian right now cause our supplier are left with bad shape ones for the same price
