Feets / Collection / My build Well, here we go again
Some of you might recognize these boomsticks from previous posts over the last 2 years. Unfortunately my previous account was banned as someone thought I was shortening firearms illegally (appealed decision). In the meantime, I’d like to once again offer the legalese.
Firearms CAN legally be shortened in Canada. You cannot cut the barrel(s) below 18” on a manual action, or 18.5” on a semi auto (you can cut a semi auto between 18”-18.4”, but then you have to register it as restricted). The overall length, regardless of action, cannot be cut below 26”.
Please see all tape measure measurements to confirm these firearms are completely legal.

I have a video of me dual wielding full length double barrels on a bench rest, all four barrels at once. That was nuts indeed

Thank you! I’ve shot these plenty over the last couple years, though I did injure my wrist 3 years ago firing one one handed a bunch (lesson learned, no longer).

I've seen these before at gun shows and every one is in friggin 12 gauge and it's like come on make one in 410.

You should be able to find single-shot ones from Turkey pretty easy for sub-$200. Hell, I recall seeing some with short barrels on them already.

That's true! But I fear any double barrels are going to be far more than double the price :(
Someone could always take one of the 12 ga ones and put adaptors in it to shoot 20ga or 410, but you still have the big heavy barrels then

There’s the cheap single shot Charles Dalys too. Usually about 150-169.

You can find single shot European ones for a couple hundred bucks on intersurplus. Sxs’s or o/u are certainly more rare

Was just checking some of those out. Thinking I have to find a couple as winter projects.
Going to chop my Charles Daly with a 28” barrel down. Shot a few time and put in the safe, bought it as I always had a single shot around growing up, but don’t use it for anything really as it’s too awkward in the bush. Going to chop it to 18.5 and have a gunsmith thread it for choke tubes like the barrel has now.
Figure it’ll be a nice little grouse gun

Easy to make legally man! Intersurplus has a ton of sxs shotguns for dirt cheap, and the supplies to make one of these isn’t terribly expensive either

Any specific way to shorten a barrel safely? Hacksaw and file?

I used a hacksaw and placed the barrels in a miter box to get a relatively decent 90° cut. Then I filed them where I needed, and crowned the inside and outside with a needle nose file.
Instead of a file, you COULD use a metal sanding disc on a disc sander after you’ve cut it with a hacksaw. The issue is, when I made one like this, it heats up so quick, that you can only really sand it for 5 seconds, then let it cool down for 10 mins. Took only 25 seconds total of sanding, but 50 mins of waiting in between (if you grind it down all in one go, the barrels would get so hot it could damage the heat treatment, or desolder the rib. It did make a perfect 90° though. Afterwards, just crown it with the needle nose file like regular and voila)

Let me tell you a little secret, that over under only cost me 270$. Intersurplus has a ton of old Soviet Baikal ones for. 250-350$

What're the pro's and con's of this? Are some of them absolutely busted and you just take that gamble, or are they all in good working order?

They get sold for cheap because they are nearly worthless in Europe.
Decades of shotgun sports mean there are tons of break actions in Europe. Add in many countries that limit the amount of guns you can own, these old shotguns are often sold for cheap to make room for the original owner to buy another more modern gun. There is just no demand for them in Europe, and a really high supply. I bet Intersurplus gets these is big pallets for crazy cheap prices.
So we benefit here where we can buy them for cheap, and Europe benefits by getting a bit of money for them rather than just destroying them.
Basically a non military version of Surplus rifles!
Edit: in Regards to working order, every one has a detailed description with any flaws and such, barrel bulged, cracked stocks, worn barrels, loose actions etc. The damaged ones are cheaper, but the great condition ones ain't bad price either. So you know what you are getting into with the condition. Each one is listed individually, not just one listing and you get whatever one you get. So it takes more time to search through them and find the one you want.

Thanks for the help! I did take a browse and saw many of the cheapest ones mentioning cracks near the trigger, or on the stock. In your experience, when are these cracks (whether size or location) something someone without the expertise to fix them, should absolutely pass on?

Pretty much all of mine have cracks and none of them have moved in years. A small crack at the tang isn’t too much of a concern. Even my drilling has 4 big cracks and it’s fine. When it’s a problem is if the crack extends from the tang all the way to the butt pad. But you could home-fix that with some titebond 3 wood glue and it would never move again and be just as strong

So I’ve purchased probably 15 firearms from intersurplus for myself, and bought and traded many more from them. The 4-5 of which had serious issues were all of the Belgian Liege variety or the Suhl Thalmann brand. All the ones with issues were also SxS shotguns. If you want true, no mess no fuss reliability, the Baikal Soviet ones are absolutely unkillable, regardless of price point. Hell, I even bought one once that was a rust bucket special, 150$. After restoring it myself one afternoon, the thing is completely solid and works as if it was brand new.
So yeah, some people are weary about second hand old firearms, especially with an incredibly low price point, I get it. But any of the BRNO (which is CZ), JP-Sauer, or Baikal brands are pretty much guaranteed to be reliable, at least in my experience

Super lame. Wasn’t even the Canada guns mods though, it was reddit itself. Banned the whole account. So now, even though I included the legalities before, I’ll be over emphasizing the legality on any posts going forward
