Feets / Collection / My build Gun Care Advice

Hey all,

I just got my PAL and snagged a gorgeous Benelli Nova 3 HD (used but basically new) for $500, and I have absolutely zero idea what products I need to clean/lubricate this thing.

I looked at some forums but they're all 20+ years old and recommend disconnected products, but I keep seeing "CLP" popping up. What are some good recommendations for cleaning/regular maintenance for this shotgun/in general?

I should mention that I have a Huntshield all-in-one cleaning kit, so bore brushes and mops aren't an issue at the moment, unless there's a specific material I should use/avoid that I need to be aware of?

Any recommended brands for the CLP? My kit comes with a cleaning cable and cleaning rod.

Hoppes is boomerslop junk. They haven't made a good chemical product in decades. Hoppes sells products purely off the nostalgia of "that's what grandpappy used so I should too"

If you want an all-rounder CLP, Ballistol is great and eco/skin friendly, and available at crappy tire. Better at removing carbon than most modern clps while being sufficient for lubrication.

If you get technical though, overwhelming majority of gun lubrication applications would be far better served with grease rather than oil. Any high pressure grease of decent quality will work fine, preferably with some moly content. There are "gun greases" but they really aren't any different than what you can get at an auto parts store, other than a higher price tag. I personally use Aeroshell 64 also known as Automattenfett.

A dedicated bore cleaner can be handy as well, though not always needed (CLP is usually sufficient for regular cleaning) they are typically better at removing metal/plastic fouling. WIPE-OUT is a foaming cleaner that is eco/skin friendly that works very well.

Tldr A good CLP like Ballistol is a good place to start but I'd pick up a decent grease and dedicated bore cleaner as well

Things to avoid:

WD-40: Will literally form a cement with carbon if it's left for a while. Dogshit at lubricating as well.

White lithium grease: Will seperate in short order and both make a huge mess and leave a hard to remove yellow crud behind

Where are you buying Hoppes? I checked Amazon and Canadian Tire and both say they're discontinued. Is there a certain name I should be looking for from Hoppes?

Check your local firearms store.

Tenda, g4c, rdsc, csc, tesro and other stores (that also sell other items) is another good source.

Unfortunately Canadian tire is a shell of it's former self and Amazon is a bit of a wasteland when it comes to firearms.

Any clp would do. We stock a variety but hoppes is a winner.

Sorry for the late reply. Ive monkeyed with a few brands in the shop. They all seem to work so long as its labeled CLP
