Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Giga turbo hopium:

Most of the rules we're familiar with regarding antique firearms are defined by regulation, not the core Firearms Act itself.

A sufficiently based future government could simply amend it by OIC to add something like:

X. Any firearm designed or manufactured before the end of the year 1945.

(Never gonna happen but it's a fun thought experiment about what our laws actually are.)

I was moaning about the antique designation year always being 1898 regardless of how much time passes until someone reminded me that the main issue with having the cut-off year “rubber-band” with the passage of time is that it’s eventually going to include machine guns.

I mean they could put a clause in there to specifically exclude machine guns but the chances of that happening any time soon are non-existent.

There are also caliber restrictions on antique firearms that people seem to forget about. Honestly what I'd prefer be done to the antique firearms act is what's been done to flintlock, wheel lock, and matchlock longarms that any reproduction automatically be classed as a antique firearm because it's frankly absurd that you can own the actual antique but not the reproduction that is just as functional as an antique. Like what the fuck are they afraid of? Pirates?

I'm just hoping that when they eventually have laser plasma guns that can be printed in any basement with a 3D printer the government will just give up and designate all old-fashioned gun powder guns as antiques.
