Gun and gear reviews Huntshield Safe Help!
Hey guys! I just bought a Huntshield 24-30 Gun Fully Assembled Cabinet from Canadian Tire.
I took it out of the box and lugged it to the basement with a buddy of mine.
Personally I LOVE IT. But there’s already a problem.
The key will NOT come out of the lock if the door is closed and in the lock position. The key will ONLY come out of the door if the door is OPEN and in the lock position.
Why? I really truly don’t want to waste my time returning it. Also because I preemptively threw out the box…
Please tell me there a solution.
*EDIT: I completely took off the locking cam bolt then reinstalled it and tightened the HELL out of it. Now it opens and closes and locks and unlocks like butter.

Is there anything in the way of the locking lugs?

Not at all! It is completely free of any and all debris all around including the door jambs and all.

Bent lugs, loose lock, something is preventing it from going into the fully locked position and not releasing the key. If it works fine open then something is preventing it from locking when closed. Mark where the key is to remove when open and check that it makes it to the same place when closed.

Can you "lock" the door with the door open? If you can then the problem is likely with the door alignment, frame or bolt holes. If you cant then its likely a lock problem.

Yes I can. I can lock and unlock the door with the door open. However the key will only come out in the “lock” position with an OPEN door.

Well then something is preventing it from fully locking when the door is closed. Are you winding the bolts fully out with the door closed?

Try pressing on the door in different places while trying to turn the key. I bet something is flexing or jamming the mechanism.

I have one of these. The key only coming out when it's looked (and being stuck in when unlocked) is a feature.
Sounds like they reversed it on yours.
Edit, premature post:
On the inside there's a rectangular part that's attached to the lock with a silver hex bolt. You should in theory be able to hold the rectangular part and undo the bolt, rotate the lock/key 90 degrees relative to the rectangular part,, then re attach reattached, i think that should solve the issue

I have installed hundreds of locks and this sounds correct,
the key should NOT come out when the door is unlocked.

It arrived in a box so I would assume it's not the display model

These cabinets usually use a 3 point locking mechanism with a key retaining cylinder. The rectangular part that rotates behind the frame next to the lock itself, and small rods that extend into vertical channels top and bottom. The cylinder will not release the key until it fully rotated into the locked position.
One of these three is not aligned and preventing you from turning the key 100%.
Try closing then locking the door as you normally are, then press with your other hand or knee into the door near the lock and see if you can turn it further to fully lock it.
Check for paint scrapes where the locking rods and side bolt slip into the frame. Bend the tabs to increase the clearance using pliers.
Adjust the locking cam bolt, just loosen it slightly to see if that helps free up the locking rods and linkage.

Last point. I completely took off the locking cam bolt then reinstalled it and tightened the HELL out of it. Now it opens and closes and locks and unlocks like butter lmfao.

Pretty sure thats a function so that you cant walk away from the safe without locking it

It's not fully locked. It probably seems like it is,but the key will need to go slightly past 90* or 180* to release.
Empty the safe of absolutely everything including foam, carpet, etc and try closing it. If it still won't close, look for rub marks on the bolts, door, and inside of the safe.
