Arrested and charged as she was I would think. She was docked pay, received a code of conduct and was criminally charged. Reading the circumstances - it’s not egregious but we expect more of our cops - not beyond reproach and infallible but they certainly need to be held to a higher standard than the general public. Lose her job? Who knows - if it’s not an integrity or character issue but negligence but not a pattern of negligence - perhaps the criminal code charge - conditional discharge and 120 hours of lost pay is sufficient. Hard to say but she’s certainly not getting special treatment here - that’s for sure.

Morally speaking, I can’t say I’d support loss of job over this. The reality is that we can sit and joke (while acknowledging that it would in fact be much worse for any of us) about how she gets a slap on the wrist compared to us, this isn’t something that should result in imprisonment providing no one is hurt from the action itself.

Now, if someone was ever injured because of an action like this, deliberate or not, yeah, loss of job and jail is definitely reasonable.

But honestly a cop making an error that we have all done with our wallets/phones at some point in time shouldn’t result in a total ruining of her life.

Generally speaking, I love and am thankful that I can make a mistake in Canada and my life not be ruined.

The people constantly making mistakes that ruin other people's lives being treated exactly the same, and no restitution for victims is the part I don't like.

I agree with you on this. I bet that cop will be 100% conscious of where that gun is forever now.

I get what you’re saying on that dude, but cops are just the messenger, not writers of the letter. The politicians, they make the laws, cops just do there job and enforce them.

I mean, what do we really expect the cops to do? Just start refusing orders? As it is, many of the departments are on our side, along with individual officers when it comes to this whole buy back nonsense.

Idk, yeah on one hand we gotta hold em to a higher standard than the rest of society, but on the other hand they really are just human like you or me.

That doesn't make it any better or reduce her culpability, how the fuck does someone just forget to grab all their shit, especially a firearm, before leaving a changing room? If one of us did that we'd be getting prison time and a lifetime firearms ban.

That doesn't explain it, at all. If I, a functional alcoholic, can keep track of my belt and EDC pouch (knife, multi-tool, flashlight, sharpie, keys) and never once accidentally leave it behind anywhere over the last several decades, then there is zero excuse or explanation for an on-duty police officer to leave a fucking loaded handgun, that she carries daily, in a public place because she "got a phone call."

When you wear it for 40 hours per week you stop noticing it. I've left a tool belt behind or forgot a drill. Different consequences, different ramifications, but I cant say I'm perfect. But I also cant pretend that its unfathomable that this wont happen from time to time for cops. Its so rare that when it does happen, its newsworthy. And rightfully so.

This is why I am leaving Canada in a couple of years. I cannot live in a country where reckless, untrustworthy cops get to have handguns while lawful, law-abiding licensed civilians can no longer legally own handguns.

Canada used to have a strong gun culture. Sad how it has become a shell of its former self in just 6 years 😢😥
