Application / Regulation advice The end is nigh for my rifles?

I signed up for the "buyback" (misnoner) because I didn't see a better path forward:
All of my guns are registered, so they already knew what I had. Changing my mind and withdrawing was explicitly presented as an option. Not obeying the law is not an option (no "boating accident"s), nor is receiving nothing for my guns if they're confiscated (I know some of you are willing to forego that as a matter of principle.. I'm not in that financial position where that'd be prudent or advisable).

The time has come to make a final decision, it seems. Received this (aggressively worded) e-mail:

Further to the previous message sent, this is a reminder notice that, should you wish to receive compensation under the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP) for your prohibited firearm(s), please accept your funding agreement and book your appointment for collection for compensation of your firearms as soon as possible and no later than 7 calendar days from receipt of this message. Collection for compensation will be available only for a limited period of time in your area on August 12-16 and 18-20 2026.

If you have already accepted your funding agreement and booked your appointment, please disregard this message. Please contact the ASFCP Contact Centre at 1-833-759-4551 should you need assistance.

Participants who withdraw from the Program or do not proceed as instructed, including missing an agreed appointment time without valid reason, will not be able to continue and obtain compensation. While the Program is voluntary, compliance with the law is mandatory. Impacted firearms and devices must be disposed of by the end of the amnesty period on 90 days after the Supreme Court of Canada renders its decision. For information on other disposal options, visit www.canada.ca/firearms-compensation.

Thank you for your interest and participation in the program.

Public Safety Canada
Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP)

They're really trying to create false time pressure (never mind when it comes to actually getting paid? It'll happen whenever they fucking feel like getting around to it..)

So.. my question is this: Is there a better path forward?

I'm sure this has been discussed to death, but this is where the shit is really hitting the fan.

Waiting until the SCOC makes its decision would be the most prudent path.. but I can't risk being forced to turn in my rifles for nothing. The proposed compensation is actually.. alright.. it covers my out of pocket expenses in acquiring these rifles and a couple of needed accessories (opportunity cost, etc.. no.. not at all.. but..).

Is this the end for my rifles?

The guy handing in his rifles is the same kid who told on everyone throwing snowballs at Recess.

We’re better off not associating

Oh, I absolutely am outraged.. and given the opportunity will loudly and profanely tell off any federal liberal party cunt I come across (to the extent free speech under the charter allows).. and under no circumstances will they ever get my vote for the rest of my life..

But as a practical matter, I just don't see a path forward that will give a better outcome. I absolutely hate that these manipulative bastards have engineering it this way, and I am utterly resentful I'm being presented with a Sophie's choice.

Many a person in Germany made a similar argument on May 9 1945, I hope you sleep well at night.

You had to, there was no choice…..

Yeah man such a shame Nazi Germany surrendered when they lost the war.

I'm sorry you're getting so attacked over this.

You've made a decision that works for you, I and others madea different decisions, but that's all it is.

Destroy them your selves ? Atleast you still
Own them. Maybe not having a trigger assembly and or bolt will be replaceable down the road…

CCFR has a 2nd court case filed (in addition to the SCC challenge).

It’s a class action in that if rifles must be handed in, then compensation must be paid (and at a mark valuation, as if the ban hadn’t happened).  IRC dedicated accessories must also be compensated

So either wait for SCC, or failing that wait for the class action or …

Or yeah, you can take your chances and maybe get a few loonies from the govt program - they after all have already demonstrated that they have your best interests in mind and are totally trustworthy & fair.  Totally

You can deactivate and sell  privately rather than to the government. Or keep. This stops them from parading your firearms around and becoming a statistic.

it’s scary how focused on money some people are and how easily it makes them forget what is right.

You think this person is treading water like someone who lives in a third world country? lol cmon. They quite obviously have access to electricity, housing, technology, food, water etc as they are posting on Reddit.

They couldn’t have been relying on the government buyback to survive because this is a unique event tied to a shift in public policy.

I certainly do blame someone for choosing to participate in a voluntary program which goes against their (at least previously held) beliefs. Especially when it’s done for financial GAIN (which is what you are defending).

Never forget that no government is eternal. Is Carney will let the Supreme Court give him a defeat or he will fix this just before… ( I personally know lawyers not involved in the case and not gun rights supporters that have told me case is good for us because the way this gun grab was established). So we need to ask ourselves why govt so hurry to get those guns and NOT waiting SCC decision ? They know that a loosing that case is highly probable.

Seems to me you have set yourself up for failure here. You knew going in the likelihood of being paid pennies on the dollar at best was there, so you were going to lose big regardless. I'm not sure what you were expecting from this post; validation or chastisement. I think personally it was very shortsighted on your part, but you're a big boy nd you can make your own mistakes.

If you’re hurting that bad, turn in a few that you don’t care about and hold on too a few in the off chance the scoc rule in our favour

OP has never yet found a rule they’ve not loved and followed. They’re a good little Sodderkommando

u/soviet_toster Aug 01 '26

Do whats right for you if that means giving in give them as little as possible

u/cernegiant Aug 02 '26

You've listed and discarded all the options open to you.

0

u/Dangerous_Seaweed601 Aug 02 '26

Yeah, the purpose of this thread was to see if there was some other option with a better outcome that I hadn’t considered (like if the government would be legally compelled to extend the “buyback” if we lose at the Supreme Court..).

It doesn’t seem like there is..

I mean, I’m holding my line like many others are. However, financials play a part in your decision and no one worth listening to is going to hold that against you my dude.

That being said, I would look to see if they are even being truthful in that as others have pointed out there are multiple court cases going on right now, one is to decide if what the government is doing is even legal, and another is to ensure if it does go forward you get properly compensated.

Might be worth holding out if you can financially swing it.

It’s a lot like the jab people can lose jobs and or their livelihood over this.. I have compassion no one wants to surrender rights/ freedoms or personal possessions. Do what is right for you. This whole situation is bull shit

The amount of non restricted firearms on the list that are going directly to non pal
Owners I would assume is mind boggling. People with nothing to lose aka pal don’t care if a firearm rm is prohibited. One could argue they are literally putting more guns on the street?

1

u/Think_Lengthiness686 Aug 01 '26

Judging by your situation, it seems you chose to comply mainly because of the financial compensation promised by Poly. But I simply don’t see how people outside Quebec will be paid. The numbers didn’t add up to begin with since the start of this bs, and they have been lowering the prices over time. Type 81 price is basically a scam and humiliation at this point, and people in this sub are reporting AR’s price dropped to $500 recently as well.
If they are not likely to pay you fairly anyway, might as well wait until last minute, no?

2

u/Dangerous_Seaweed601 Aug 01 '26

I don’t know about prices being lowered, at least not for the types of rifles I own. The amount of money they’re offering has stayed constant. Whether they try to fuck me over on that of course is another question.

The amount is not unreasonable vs what I paid (no idea if it remains reasonable based on market values..)

u/fyfnw Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26

Make your own decision. Know that they are under no obligation to pay you even their quoted amount. Its legally possible for you to declare your firearms, turn them in, and receive nothing in compensation. Choose wisely. Good luck.

My opinion, I'd rather keep a castrated firearm than give the Liberals the satisfaction of handing it over for destruction.

Let’s be very real here - if the SC overturns the results, the Liberals can very easily ram through legislation to ban it. The lawsuit is currently about whether guns can be banned via OIC, so if it gets overturned, it means nothing for guns to be banned by name via legislation. I think it’s important to keep this in mind as we go forward.

So if you back out from the buyback, there’s a chance it’ll be legal for a small while, but I think it’s delusional for anyone to think they’ll stay unbanned for long. If you can’t take the financial risk of this getting rebanned and not getting money back for it, then you should just hand them in now.

Your other option is to export it to US, but that’s not a process I would assume to be simple.

I turned mine in earlier this week. My job depends on being able to hold a security clearance, so I don’t have the luxury of risking any friction with the law.

I signed all the petitions. I marched in the protest on Parliament Hill in July of 2020. I wrote my MP, the Minister of Public Safety, and the Prime Minister, multiple times. I donated to both the CSSA and the CCFR. I advocated online and in person.

None of it has made any difference whatsoever. Nothing has changed, or even slowed in the slightest. It’s clear they’re determined to press on with this. The era of sport shooting with semi auto rifles is over in Canada. I wish it wasn’t, but they have a majority, and the public sentiment isn’t on our side.

The Supreme Court appeal will fail. Even if it doesn’t, C-21 is already law. There’s no un-doing this. At best, you’re delaying the inevitable. I’m sorry, I don’t like it any more than the rest of you. But I saw a chance to at least get my money back, so I took it.

For what it’s worth, I will never, ever, vote Liberal again for the rest of my life (I’d previously supported Paul Martin).

Pretty much in the same boat as you..

4

u/cernegiant Aug 02 '26

This is the rational move for you and it's nuts the way people who aren't in you r situation are looking down on you.

1

u/outline8668 Aug 03 '26

I would destroy the firearm receivers myself before capitulating to the liberals confiscation scheme pumping their numbers and then still having the nerve to cry about it on reddit.

2

u/cernegiant Aug 03 '26

That's wonderful you're in the financial position to be able to do that. Some people aren't. That doesn't make them evil or worthy of derision.

0

u/JTrudeausLeftNut Aug 01 '26

Do what you think is right. They are your guns, if you want to turn them in, go for it. If you dont, then keep them.

That said, a few things to keep in mind:

  1. The SCC is a longshot. even if the govenment loses, they can enact new legislation. Anyone saying otherwise is huffing premium copium.

  2. For restricted guns, the goverment will likely cancel rpals if you cant prove the gun was disposed of

1

u/cernegiant Aug 02 '26

I think this is right. The court challenge is worth doing, but it's a real long shot

1

u/TescoValueSoup Aug 01 '26

Do what you think is right but don’t come here expecting advice on making that decision.

There are still people out there able to (legally) buy what you’ve got that aren’t the government.

2

u/Dangerous_Seaweed601 Aug 01 '26

There are still people out there able to (legally) buy what you’ve got that aren’t the government.

Can you elaborate on that? All other things being equal, I'd rather not play ball with the government..
