Gun and gear reviews Vang Comp vs Regular 590A1

I was recently watching the Garand Thumb video on the Vang Comp 870 in which he compared it to the 590A1. The results found in his tests were that the 590A1 was actually slightly more accurate both with federal flight control and bad sterling buckshot.

Of course this is one test with 1 gun so results would likely not be the same from person to person, but does anyone actually have experience with the Vang comp?

In the video he mentions the 590s excellent barrel harmonics which is why accuracy difference is negligible. Does anyone know this to be particularly true in their experience?

From what i heard vang comp is merely just a custom made, smoother feeling 590a1. What occurred in the video could just be individual differences. builds such as the one by vang comp mostly tunes up the feeling, handling, erganomics, and quality of the shotgun. However, the intrinsic mechanical accuracy for solid projectiles should remain identical

Not quite. The Vangcomp job involves machine work to lengthen the forcing cone which creates an internal "choke" and the option to port the barrel. It's been proven greatly improve the size of buck shot groups at distance.

I have a 590A1, a 590, and a couple of Mavericks, but my new shotgun is a 1301 Comp Pro. The 1301 is much more flexible than my 590s since it is threaded for chokes. I can now use my 1301 Comp Pro for dynamic shooting with the 21" barrel, and I also ordered a 28" A400 Xtreme Plus barrel for skeet/trap.

I guess ultimately it depends on what you want to use it for.

Most 590A1s only have a cylinder barrel and are not threaded for chokes (although you can get it done at TacOrd). TacOrd is also a VanComp shop, so they can VanComp/port the barrel too if you prefer to go chokeless.

Vangcomp lengthens the forcing cone which creates a internal "choke". Its going to have a similar effect as a thread in choke but you see better patterns at greater distance. Chokes deform the shot and make it fly more irregular.

Someone will come along to argue that chokes are better or do the same thing and they probably haven't tested or actually held a gun that has been modified. That being said for most people a choke will change the pattern at acceptable ranges and thats why we don't see similar machine work going into other firearms, people prefer a cheaper price point or the versatility of chokes, over the ability to throw a ten inch group of 00 buck at 25 yards.

Flite Control and Versatite loads also give very similar (some argue better) results over vangcomp or chokes, and considering the time and money for machine work most of us probably could get away using it.

The vangcomp system can't be done on my 1301 because of its chrome lined barrel, so I just shoot cheap ammo and keep a few boxes of Flite Control around for more important work
