Misc What’s the largest caliber rifle that’s available in the open market?

I was scrolling through Reddit earlier and came across a historical post featuring a Boys anti-tank rifle. It got me wondering:
What's the largest caliber rifle you personally own?
And out of curiosity, what's the largest caliber rifle that's currently available on the market?
Looking forward to seeing everyone's answers and maybe a few pictures too.

Cheers

378 Weatherby brings you up there as well as the cartridges based on it. 338-378 and 300-378. The 378 necked up to the .460 Weatherby it becomes illegal over 10k joules.

It's freaking silly tho never heard of a crime committed with a Weatherby super magnum.

Oh if it's ignited by flint or match it qualifies as antique and there's no limit. Pirate cannons are a-ok.

Except if it’s a reproduction ignited by flint or match and is a pistol, then it’s illegal again.

I haven’t the slightest idea how a field gun from the 1890s isn’t anti material… not complaining

Reproduction 1890s cannons would be percussion and banned. Originals are a-ok.

if its match , slow match or flint fired, a reproduction is fine like an original pre 1898. Here is a replica 1790 6 pdr French Iron letting go a 3 inch ball. Its using a 30 second match fuse for ignition over 2.5 pounds of single F.

It's going to be some Mauser pattern bolt action chambered in an obscure magnum caliber that's less than 9000 joules.

10,000J and under and still good. A few skirt the limit.

.577 Nitro Express... 9500 Joules, 49 grams of chunk of lead.

Safari rounds under 10,000 joules are the biggest legally allowed ones. For example

375 H&H
500 nitro express

There are a bunch at 450 and 460 but I’m not a safari dude.

More common “big” rounds are 45-70 for hunting and 338LM for long distance shooting (though folks favour smaller rounds these days like 7mm PRC.

My biggest is a 325wsm lever

500 Jeffery and 375 Enablr come closest to the limit.

577 Nitro Express falls under the limit.

Ngl something called a Jeffery doesn’t sound scary, but it would probably separate my spine

Just when you think its gone... it comes right back again!

I know 338 lapua is still allowed. All the big calibers got banned as falsely being interpreted as ‘anti-material’

I mean….the 50bmgs kinda were….(not that I agree with any of the bans)

7

u/meowmixonroids Aug 01 '26

Damn… I never got to fire the one at silverdales

u/Dull-Hunt-6880 Aug 01 '26

I really wanted a GM6 Lynx or Cadex Tremor

1

u/OCTS-Toronto Aug 01 '26

I wanted the lynx for years. Then I saw a YouTube review (I think Brandon Herrera) who showed the gun was sub standard. Poor accuracy and feed issues. Kinda glad I didn't sink those massive dollars on a mediocre gun that is a paperweight now

Me too. It was my dream gun.

u/spronglynoodle Aug 01 '26

I got a chance to fire one on Canada Day at my local range before the ban. I was grinning like a fool

Largest caliber or energy?

6

u/meowmixonroids Aug 01 '26

Really anything cool…. I’m bored at a wedding and am looking for conversation lol

u/hafetysazard Aug 01 '26

Get a .577 Nitro Express. They’re still legal, apparently.

u/meowmixonroids Aug 01 '26

I saw a video of some dude in the states with a P40, with all 6 .50cals in service.

What a life that would be!

Honestly, I probably couldn’t even afford the ammo

2

u/hafetysazard Aug 01 '26

I think .577 ammo in Canada would push $400/ a box

1

u/Flat-Dark-Earth Big Bore Specialist Aug 01 '26

Hell new Federal 470NE and 500NE already pushes $400 per box.

u/FiestaLimon Aug 01 '26

Umarex makes a .50 cal air rifle that intrigues me...

1

u/meowmixonroids Aug 02 '26

Is that the one that demolition ranch trialed a few years back?

6

u/95accord Jul 31 '26

375 enabler

1

u/Primary_Judge Aug 01 '26

Enabelr.... spelt like that for the ELR (extreme long range)

3

u/RealTurbulentMoose Aug 01 '26

I looked up a .500 Jeffery I saw used the other day and that’s getting over 9000 joules if you load it up.

Why wouldn’t you?

Also, possibly why it was available used. Someone probably took it out one time or on safari or something and said never again.

3

u/ShadowcastZ Aug 01 '26

375 enabelr, it's 9600 joules. Anybody that says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about.

In Canada? Justin Turdeaus Rifled plug. I'll search for a picture later....

u/handen Jul 31 '26

Are you even trying to make sense?

4

u/meowmixonroids Aug 01 '26

He’s talkin about butt plugs my guy

2

u/hafetysazard Aug 01 '26

.577 Nitro Express, 750 grain bullet 2050ft/s

2

u/LongRangeMoose Aug 01 '26

I think technically you could still but a 50BMG. Aslong as the barrel was short enough to he under the Joule limit?

1

u/GodsGiftToWrenching Aug 01 '26

Biggest caliber? Probably .577 enfield or something else in .577, there may be something with an even bigger bore, which if you recall from the CFSP that caliber is indeed the size of the projectile not the power related to the round

1

u/EngorgedGorilla Aug 01 '26

.729 cal but you can find .775 cal at most gun stores.

1

u/_Pray_To_RNGesus_ Aug 02 '26

Technically, there isn't a limit as long as it's an antique. Someone posted about getting an antique 4 bore a while ago.

I have (had) a WB Mk 5 safari Classic...in 460 WM. I contacted them ( Weatherby) and bought a new barrel in .378, so i get to keep my rifle now as its no longer " Above 10k joules" .

1

u/Background-Way7794 Aug 04 '26

i have a few in .75, .69 and .577 cals

1

u/Sad-Stop-2401 Aug 15 '26

.577 Nitro Express. 49 grams of lead, 9500 Joules of energy. Immeasurable awesomeness.

Isn't she beautiful? I am even getting turned on by its shape.
