Buy recommendations Is it even worth it to get Makasi?
In my mind there’s three possibilities with supreme court case that impact value of Makasi. If government cancels oics and pre ban firearms are back that would make Makasi a joke. I am a big fan of eastern bloc firearms, so if i can pick up a t81 or svt i wouldnt even ever touch an AR, let alone this thing.
If government loses the case but maintain status quo by neither lifting previous oic nor issuing new oic, makasi could be worth it. If government wins and double down by banning makasi then you just bought yourself a 2700 dollar toy.
Probably better to hold money before scc decision comes out.

Your bird in your hand is worth two in the tush, or however the saying goes.

u/spicymeatmemes Jul 31 '26
A glass bird shouldn't throw rocks at houses, is how it goes i think

u/yummybunnybear Jul 31 '26
I think it was two birds throwing one rock

No its “two swallows carrying a coconut”

What do you mean? Two African or European swallow's?

There’s a lot of “ifs” in your post!
Personally, I wouldn’t count on any currently prohib firearms coming back anytime soon, if ever. Libs got a majority so any hope of common sense gun laws are 100% gone for the couple years, at minimum.
The Makasi has been around for a while in the states and it reviews well against their extensive AR market. I’d say it’s a good buy if you’re in the market for this type of rifle.
You sound like you need a couple sks and Mosins though lol.

u/COBETCKNNcoyuz Jul 31 '26
I have a chinese sks, a pre war tula mosin and a pu sniper mosin. I wish i had applied for pal immediately after my course in 2023 but no i gotta procrastinate, so no svt or t81 for me. Also not hating on these guns but thats pretty much the only east bloc stuff you can buy, and they get boring at the range
3
u/Murray3-Dvideos Jul 31 '26
If you find those boring at the range then your in for some disappoint if you ever get your hands on the SVT or Type 81 lol.

u/GopherRebellion Jul 31 '26
Type 81 is an absolute dog. Entire time shooting it just made me think longingly of my VZ.

u/COBETCKNNcoyuz Jul 31 '26
Well ofc humans are wired to value things they dont have. But imo type 81 with folding stock is a masterpiece in its compactness and beauty. Ive seen commercial t81s built after 2020s such as SL and LMG and yea those look dogshit. But im talking about og t81.

There is a strong case to get the OIC's turned over in the SCC.
From my reading, legally, government has broad power to prohibit firearms by regulation but it must form the opinion that the firearms are not reasonable for hunting or sport as per the Criminal Code 117.15 i think it is.
It will come down to whether the banned firearms are integral to legitimate, widespread sporting activities. If the government’s position is that these firearms are not “reasonable” for sport, despite being standard equipment in established disciplines, then it must explain why those disciplines themselves fall outside what Parliament meant by “sporting purposes.” iPSC has a strong case here.
So Section 117.15 gives Cabinet (government) authority to classify firearms by regulation. But subsection (2) limits that power: The government “may not prescribe” something as prohibited if, in its opinion, it is reasonable for use in Canada for hunting or sporting purposes.
The SCC would need to be convinced that.
117.15(2) is a hard constraint, not soft discretion
Parliament intentionally limited government power
- “Opinion” is reviewable in a meaningful way
- Not just “any plausible view”
- Must be consistent with evidence and statutory purpose
“Reasonable for hunting/sport” has objective content 1. Not whatever Cabinet says it is 2.Cabinet applied the wrong test 3.Focused on “danger” instead of actual sporting/hunting use
If the SCC accepts these then OIC becomes inconsistent with the statute therefore ultra vires.
Bottomline. If the firearms are in fact widely used for hunting and sport, the regulation is outside the delegated authority and ultra vires.
I think the strongest case maybe IPSC because it is international and has a governing body. Government banned because they said there was too many. They should have have been given an exception.
Also, as someone else mentioned. If the government loses at the SCC they will probably do this via regulation, but that's another major chunk of taxpayer money. Plus, I don't see how they could justify more bans when they stated there are alternatives. If you ban alternatives then that becomes another legal battle I'm sure.

Banning firearms by government bill becomes their next platform promise for the next election, because they aren't doing well right now and they'll need something to boost their popularity.
35
u/Sad-Trash-7101 Jul 31 '26
Liberals have a majority gov. They can basically pass any bill they want right now without an OIC
Trudeau only did the OIC because he had a minority government and couldn’t pass laws without support of another party.
Do what you want, but know that every semi could be on the chopping block

u/Mysterious_Sleep7443 Jul 31 '26
All the more reason to buy one (several)
Only a sheep lives in fear of buying something due to the government or bans

u/Murray3-Dvideos Jul 31 '26
Sounds like the SKS is all youll ever need.

u/floppy_breasteses Jul 31 '26
I have rats under my chicken coop. SKS would technically work but you need a shop vac for the cleanup.
I'd add a nice .22 to the roster.

u/looloopklopm Jul 31 '26
Needs another 4 inches on the stock for my 6'4" ass. I love mine but shooting it is.... Yeah

Just buy it stop overthinking it If you are looking for an excuse not to then don’t

u/WonkyTusky Jul 31 '26
Correct me if wrong, but if they loose the court case, couldnt we start buying/using previously banned firearms and if arrested just say “supreme court said its fine” because if one were to do this and get arrested/charged anyways wouldnt that open a whole other can of worms?
12
u/Parking_Media Jul 31 '26
I wouldn't hold your breath on that one.

u/WonkyTusky Jul 31 '26
I mean think about it. Say we win in court and the next day i go to the range to shoot off the dust of my safe queen. What are they going to do? Arrest me for using a prohibited firearm? I wouldnt even need a lawyer, all i would have to say is “ supreme court said its not illegal” they cant charge me for using property i legally posses in a safe environment.

u/Parking_Media Jul 31 '26
I can make stuff up too bud, like the next day legislation drops that says Trudeau was actually 5 racoons with terrible socks in a cheap suit.
What my comment says indirectly but I will now spell out painfully - wait and see.

u/thecoolernameistaken Aug 02 '26
Yea except they would find out it’s not prohibited they same way they would find out that it is

u/Unknownuser010203 Jul 31 '26
I'm gonna wait to see what the government does before I buy a rifle 🐑🐑🐑

u/DarkenemyxXx Jul 31 '26
If you’re sitting there biting your nails and thinking of all the reasons you shouldn’t spend the money then I don’t think this is for you. You need to have the fuck it approach and not care about what happens. I pre ordered a Carmel fully expecting a ban and I don’t care about spending the money.

u/Geralt-of-Rivai Jul 31 '26
It's a solid non restricted semi auto 223, it'll always have value for gun owners. Even if everything were to be brought back it's still a solid choice for that criteria
6
u/Ustauk Jul 31 '26
Even if the standard AR comes back tomorrow, people are starting to value external piston firearms again, especially if suppressors are on the menu, too. The Makasi fits the same AR ergo with forward piston niche of the MCX, BRN-180, Jakl, and SCAR Gen 2, so people will still about it, even if internal piston, DI-ish guns are back. Variety is the spice of life!

I don't want to speak for OP, but how I read it is that they are more talking about general trends in the market, not specifically Canada

Well if they ban it they have to compensate, likely around the msrp, so there's not to much risk there. To ban it they'd have to reboot the buyback program or run round #2. Which I suspect could happen anyhow. But it's problematic for them to explain to tax payers and anti gunners that they compensated people for their AR-15, they confiscated those, people bought makasis with the compensation, and now they're confiscating those. Of course legacy media would never talk about the liberals wasting tax payer money so.
Some people would prefer to have one even if it does get banned. Everyone should have a reliable, accurate semi rifle, whether you're allowed to take it out or not.
15
u/Fuzzy-Decision2843 Jul 31 '26
Right right, because those participating in the buyback are getting compensated at MSRP
0
u/Dependent_Account603 Jul 31 '26
Close to it on some rifles. Far from on others. Of course it's been 6 years in the safe for some rifles. 6 years of record inflation .

"Well if they ban it they have to compensate, likely around the msrp, so there's not to much risk there. "
Where have you been the past few years?
Honestly, if we are going based on past near history, if something as inconsequential as a GSG-16 22LR gets banned, I'd wager its 60% or higher that the Makasi is banned within 5 years. I'd also wager its 60% or higher its with $0 compensation.

u/Few_Lynx2224 Aug 02 '26
The makasi is only work it for autists like me who love the Fal and the Car-15 and want a hybrid
2
u/ExplorerEnjoyer Jul 31 '26
Damn I wish I could take my SVT out again. I’d skip on the Makasi since its reliability and build quality have been issues for people. I’d get the iwi Carmel though
5
u/beastslayer2563 Jul 31 '26
What SVT? Didn’t you lose that thing in a boating accident? Have you lost your mind?
9
u/GodsGiftToWrenching Jul 31 '26
Ugh another lost in a boating accident thing... wheres the report of a lost or stolen firearm since it is unlawful to not report a lost or stolen firearm... however I think OP actually had a "catastrophic malfunction" that rendered the SVT "inoperable and permanently destroyed" while it was still classified as non restricted
5
u/hockeyfanatic777 Jul 31 '26
This is what I’ve been trying to say for months now whenever I see this boating incident. If you’re NR firearm malfunctions and you must destroy it yourself - no need to report this to government. You can legally destroy it and be done with it.
If you LOSE it, you are legally obligated to report it as such.
No, you DIDNT LOSE IT IN A BOATING INCIDENT.
It malfunctioned, it was rendered inoperable, so you destroyed it while it was still classed as an NR.

That's where im at with new guns, I cant justify spending 2000-2800 on a rifle that might end up being confiscated.
Im sticking with safer bets, bolts and levers.

Keep living in fear

Fear of wasting money.

u/Mysterious_Sleep7443 Aug 01 '26
Bro, you can always make more money, but you cant always buy a certain rifle

u/hunterofsteelhead Jul 31 '26
My american friends have told me its a decent rifle and they have much more options on the market. Why is it a joke to us canadians?
