Misc Federation Arms SPM 12 9”

You ever buy a gun and then ask yourself why?

In the case of this Federation Arms SPM 12 w/ 9” barrel, sure, I could carry it for hiking. I do live near the north coast of BC and there are mountains and mountain trails everywhere… and lots of bears…. But I restrict my hiking to August and the bears are all down by the river or in lush lowland vegetation.

But I already own a Benelli SuperNova Tactical 12 pump shotgun…

Build quality looks ok although the charging handle is bolted on cheap plastic. Still, not a bad buy for $575 but not great…. But my God that Benelli has shot upped in price since I bought it.

I still haven’t taken it to the range yet…

The last one of these I tried out in store didn’t have an action lock. Is that the case with this one?

The possibility of being able to pull it out of battery while firing terrifies me.

I had a Turkish shotgun that was a spring assisted pump set up like that, it shot fine prior to my realizing it but I walked away with the same feeling, felt kind of off. Functioned fine and never had trouble with popping out of battery but yeah, couldn't shake it.

The impulse with a box fed shotgun is to try mag dumping it rapidly at least once, and my worry is that firing that quickly (even with spring assist) could lead to a short stroke at some point or premature pump after it’s been in battery and firing pin is armed.

Absolutely, even just running a tube gun slower it just felt weird to me, may be in the tolerances of safe but it just felt really weird that the spring on the pump was what was keeping my bolt shut, and nothing else that I could see, unless it had some kind of inertial lock but... suuuure didn't feel like it.

Going fast to mag dump like you said would definitely feel a bit risky to me too, it would give me the heebie jeebies. I preferred the UTS-15 that had its spring assist as optional, and actually locked up solid before firing, like I assume most other options do.
