Ruger American Gen II Scout in 5.56, fresh from IRG. Haven’t fired it yet, but it feels great, right out of the box, and excited to try the scout scope arrangement.

I’m always curious when I see scout setups these days, what’s the draw? (And because tone is hard to read, I’m not being shitty, just curious). I got it prior to the availability of the great LPVOs/MPVOs we have these days but know I don’t see how a scout scope is preferable to a 1-8/10 or a 2-10/12 mounted on the receiver. The irons are cool but I can’t think of the last time I saw anyone with the optic on a qd mount so you could use the irons in a pinch anyways. Regardless, cool looking rifle and would be curious to hear what pushed you that way.

Forward mounted scope let's you grab the rifle around the receiver which is way nicer when trudging through the brush. At least with the gunsites m77 action you can just toss rounds willy nilly into the open top reciever and they will still feed flawlessly. Good QD rings are a must, I also dont understand why more people don't use them. Being able to quickly remove and replace my scope and have it still hold zero is awesome as I really like using iron sights sometimes.

No worries about tone at all, bud! Honestly it’s purely curiosity that pushes me in this direction at this point. I was apprehensive at first thinking about it, as I have zero prior experience with the setup or scout scopes and I have a brand new Vortex Diamondback still in the box on top of my cabinet, but then my local store conveniently had a scout scope come in this week and I took a look through it with both eyes open and it felt more comfortable than I expected. It was perfectly timely getting the boomstick and then the scope in the same week.

Awesome, thanks for the reply! Curiousity is as good a reason as any, haha. I’m so OCD about “optimizing” my rigs that I often forget we can just do shit for fun too 🤣
