Sorry, didn't see the heading! Rather a standoffish thing to say though? haha. If someone new to the firearms community didn't know what a OOB, why not educate them?

Ignore that other guy. It was an out-of-battery discharge. Google defines it better than me so.. OOB discharge is an accidental firing that happens when a cartridge explodes before the firearm's bolt or breechblock is fully closed and locked into place.
So basically the slide wasn’t fully closed when the bullet detonated sending shrapnel toward his face. Good thing he was wearing eye pro like a smart shooter should. Cheers,

thankfully! got a minor pin prick of shrapnel on the tip of my nose but thats it. could have been a lot worse

That pause and slow turn was my brain fighting between "keep the possibly still live gun pointed in a safe direction" and "holy fuck what was that, what hit my face, do a blood check NOW"

Out of battery.... My primal fear. More reason to keep the firearm clean, springs well tested and only supported and high quality ammo.

Seen a couple Turkish pump shotguns that’ll allow an easy OOB since there’s no action lock. They’re box mag fed too, so of all the shotguns that are likely to be short stroked/fired reaaaally quickly without verifying the action is closed…

There is a reason I have strict policy to not buy Turkish firearms. They are doing a lot of experimental designs and that is great but ultimately their manufacturing process is usually a lot more like distributed handicraft with entire villages making gun-parts for some manufacturer. QC is not as good as I will like a firearm to have.

If you suspect the gun can fire out of battery, there is a function check you can do. Take a pencil, or other light weight writing implement that can travel loosely down the bore, but which is still large enough covers the firing pin hole. With the firearm checked and verified to be unloaded, drop the pencil, or marker, down the bore resting against the firing pin hole, put your action in the not fully locked position that concerns you, then pull the trigger. If the pencil, or marker, goes flying out the barrel, you know your firearm had the possibility of being fired out of battery. It is also a useful method to make sure your firing pin, or any safeties, are working properly in general.
