Do you mind me asking what kind of handguns you can get with an exemption? I assume 22 LR. My dad's family is from Canada, and I'll probably be going to college up there. I love shooting sports in the U.S. and would love to continue them in Canada.

No restriction on calibre.. there are work arounds that are legal.

9mm Luger/parabellum barrels can be swapped legally after exemption for competition but your going to have to prove you compete well past the threshold I previously mentioned. I’ve had my pistols pre OIC and purchased prior but I compete year round on both sides of the border. Look into three gun competitions, you need insurance plus club, team etc etc
