Buy recommendations ELCAN SpecterDR 1.5x-6x 7.62 BDC or similar optics
Hello everyone. I’ve been struggling to find an appropriate optic for my Ruger Scout .308. I do not like the traditional scout scope setup, it’s a bit awkward. I’ve tried an LPVO and it was just okay. Looking for opinions and advice from individuals who have used the Spectre or a Spectre clone. I’m open to other optic recommendations as well. Thanks.

308 has enough range that personally I’d suggest a 2-12, I’ve had a ton of fun with that magnification range.

The elcan 1.5-6 is ~25oz, an Athlon Helos BTR GEN2 with a lightweight mount will be ~31oz, a 6oz difference for much better performance, eye box and higher magnification range.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll look into the Athlon. Do you use the Athlon yourself?

Yeah I’ve had that model for about two years, it’s an excellent scope for out to 500 yards but you can use the 2x the same way you’d use an lvpo for close range, it’s an excellent option for 308.

Primary Arms has a new PLx scope out that is 1.5-12x and has an available .308 BDC reticle for half the price of the Elcan that is worth looking into.

Used the ELCAN directly on a Bolt 308 for a while and had a friend who used it on a Ruger Gunsite Scout.
Good: Fast Target Aq, Incredibly quick switch from 1x to 4x due to lever switch, easy to zero and attach no rings needed due to ARMS levers. Bombproof.
Bad: Optic sits far too high over bore, even using the lowest adjustment setting, a cheek riser has to be adjusted to be able to get your eyes directly on target due to the elevation of the ELCAN Optic itself above the arms levers,
Weight. She is heavy. Period.
No Magnification past 4x, which is obvious, but for those who want to shoot past 300 it gets sketchy. Heck even past 200 it gets iffy.
Friend sold his ELCAN and bought an LVPO.
The ELCAN is great. Amazing optic. Just wrong use case for bolties. Use it for Mil Rifles. Its what they were designed for.
Hope this helps.

Honestly, those Elcans were great in their day but are kind of dated. If that’s your budget I’d def look into a top tier LPVO like a Razor 1-10 or Atacr 1-8 with a proper height mount or rings. I have tons of time/rounds on the 1-10 and it’s really the best compromise out there for a very fast 1x on the low end and a very usable 10x (granted tighter eyebox).

I've shot a rifle with a SpectreDR. It's nice, but not something worth the price tag, especially on a bolt action. IMO. It's clearly marketed at government buyers where budget doesn't matter.
Personally I'd take a nice FFP LPVO. 1-10 probably, though I mostly use 1-6.
