Misc Question

Post image

Anybody know what gun his mag would used in? Looks a lot bigger than 5.56-.223 to me.

They are Sig 716 and they were acquired not without some controversy. Truly hypocritical. Meanwhile the Canadian Rangers are doing just fine against polar bears with Tikka T3x Arctics.

I mean personally I started carrying a BAR in .308 instead of my t3x in .308 for deep brush hunting. I like being able to justify it by saying "it's essentially what the conservation officers are carrying for the same reason".

Honestly, I really  want a semi auto 308. Folding stock to make up for the 18.5 inch barrel while still keeping it compact.

Chances are I'll never have to defend myself against a wild animal,  but if I ever did have too, I'd much  rather have a 5 round semi auto Than fumble with my bolt action. Even better if they had pistol mags.

The only other gun I'd feel confident I could maybe shoot a second  shot is a pump action, from all the practice missing at clays and having to shoot again. Otherwise.... not even my lever action to I feel is be able to shoot twice in a stressful situation

It was pump action for me until I got into hunting. I was looking into levers but all the triggers are pretty subpar, and I didn't realize the Bar was still legal, pretty happy with it. It's long but for hunting it's not an issue. Definitely makes me feel better being out in the middle of nowhere alone with the prey and predators.

True, I guess most hunting rifles are 20 inches or close anyways.

What caliber is your bar in?? I've been looking at the cheaper used European 3006 ones for a while now.  Figured the cost savings over the 308 versions were worth it,  though if they finally bring in the removable magazines bars,  that might change

Edit  reread your first comment and realized you said it was a 308!

Yeah I landed on .308 for a few reasons-

-It's plentiful, and PMC bronze is available for cheap training ammunition. -It holds 4 in the hinge mag instead of 3. -Recoil to lethal range ratio is perfect for North American game all the way up to moose.

That's the main reason I'd want one over my 12ga is for a momma or bull moose. In the Loch Alva wilderness area they are all over. The black bears are usually pretty skittish so we don't really have to worry about them unless you get between the mom and her cubs.

12g slugs are still extremely, if not more efficient for stopping wilderness threats. If not hunting I would take my 12g over the bar.

I should clarify that slugs would be 3" hard cast like brennek black magic or something similar

Yeah I'm carrying the Rio Brenneke hard cast slugs, but I always think about how little time I'd have if I were loaded for ruffed grouse (2 3/4", 1 1/4oz, #6 bismuth at 1450fps) like I usually am when walking and a moose came out of the thicket. If I shot that at a charging moose it would probably just piss it off. I guess that's where a 10mm handgun in a holster would be useful. Thanks RCMP... Either way I'm definitely not getting a BAR any time soon because of the price so it's just wishful thinking. My next gun will probably be a lever action in .357 for fun plinking with the kids. The .22LRs are only so much fun you know? For now I'll keep carrying bear spray and hoping.

I hear ya, .357 is fun. Brother got a mares leg and replaced the short grip for a compact stock. Can load .38 special for it cheaper for plinking and +p bear loads when camping. Probably ban safe too and holds enough that it would give you a change in a predator scenario

Definitely feel you on that, my highest caliber gun is my 308 bolt action for many of the same reasons. Cheapo norinco ammo, or spend a little bit extra for the PMC bronze, and more capacity in the mags.
