Gun and gear reviews Backland Hunter Comp First Impressions

Ever since the original backland hunter came out I’ve been eying one, but the reviews kept me away. Seeing the comp come out and a few good reviews I decided to give it a try.

Ordered a set of irons for it which still haven’t arrived, but I wanted to try it out so threw a red dot on and took it to EESA.

Ran about 50 rounds of .223 with the only issue being not feeding 2 rounds. Also realized that if you raise the cheek riser it’ll block the charging handle lol.

New to guns so I don’t have anything to compare to, but fit and finish is good. Planning on taking it out again next weekend and might update.

2 failures to feed in 50 rounds isn't great... but i hear sometimes these have a bit of a break in period.

often people will end up needed to file down spots on/around the bolt carrier to let it run smoother. which is crazy for the price tag this thing carries.

It could also be the mag, i function tested one for a customer and the 2nd round on one of the mags just would not feed everytime, but all others ran fine. At least it comes with 6 mags.

The mags absolutely blow ass.

100%. I mean its a neat idea and theyre cross mags, but yeah its definitely the weakest part of the gun for sure.

It's 100% the mags they are fucking awful I own the normal backland with the upgraded guts from their "gen 2" it's fine but the mags do hang up they are just cheap shitty plastic you can flex em by just squeezing them. Besides that it's actually a pretty fun gun to just plink things with

You ever find a fix for the mags? It sure looks like the mag well could easily be modified to fit standard AR mags but im not gonna grind up a $2400 rifle.

I did want to take apart 1 mag and try swapping in an anti tilt follower from one of my AR mags. If you push down the front of the follower on the crusader mag vs a proper AR mag you can really see how much the anti tilt follower helps. I think that is what the issue is. 2 of mine seem to do it worse. I have about 200rd through my Comp model and probably had about 5 jams. Maybe the mags and gun just need to break in a bit more though. Super fun to shoot though and surprisingly accurate.

As was said below, it was one mag in particular that had this happen. Just set it aside for now.
