Guys, please stop posting your handguns. I will have to wait until September for mine because my lazy ass did not apply for the exemption sooner when I learnt about it

Sorry I haven't been keeping up to date, is an exemption easy to get? How does one go about getting one? I thought you could only be Olympic shooter?

u/Even-Somewhere-9554 6d ago

In BC, yes. As long as you are reasonable not sending BCTSA your shopping list but only the ones you are able to buy.

We need a pinned post about how to do it in each province

This will keep coming up

u/Even-Somewhere-9554 6d ago

It was pinned for a while before the mod removed it

In Quebec???? Possible???? Or are we the gayest province as usual

u/BonaFideDueDiligence 6d ago

Theoretically possible, but I have yet to find anyone who has managed to do it. The FQTIR doesn't issue exemptions, only the SFC does in Quebec. Therefore, you have take the long route by competing and showing proof of training over 4-6 months. This means you need to borrow a handgun to complete all of this and subsequently obtain the exemption from the SFC. Good luck if you don't know anyone who already owns one. No club in my region lends out handguns.

Dang so basically I’m completely out of luck 😢 (I don’t know anyone with one to lend me)

These posts are making me so discouraged - and enormously jealous. In Ontario, there’s simply no feasible way to obtain the required exception.

I became a SFC member, requested the letter, was told I needed to compete and prove it. You can’t compete without a 22LR handgun. And you need to compete at a range/event officially recognized by the SFC and that publicly posts scores.

I’m in Ottawa - and from what I’ve seen, there’s no clear way to:

  1. Obtain a 22LR to actually use in a competition
  2. Find a relatively close location that SFC would deem appropriate or proof of me competing.

Has anyone else in Ontario found a realistic path to do this?

I’m a member at three local ranges but none qualify.

It's a huge Catch-22 and ONTarget is doing nothing to help Ontarians get into the sport.

ISSF is being run in Sharon (GTA area), but the orientation course was in May.

You can check for events at ontariotarget.ca.

My range invested in being a member of the SFC and a bunch are getting the exemption

1

u/FartKing6T9 4d ago

Which range

1

u/Flaky_Process_3780 4d ago

Cornwall handgun club

u/Rough_Increase1325 6d ago

How do you think I feel? XD In qc and I say F**K Poly se souvient!

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears 6d ago

If you’re in Ottawa, try out the RA Centre Gun Club. There was a member who received his handguns who posted about it here

3

u/Hisoka365 6d ago

The only competitions in the Ottawa area that I know of is in Arnprior. At the RA center, we practice every Wednesday and track our scores. I don't think they accept it as legitimate records but will soon probably.

Was for competitions at the RA center, we are a long way from hosting one as our turning targets aren't working. We still need to get that setup as the wires were shot out by some one.

What are the requirements to become a provincially qualified Olympic sport organization?

8

u/GreenCactus223 6d ago

Are those all .22?

4

u/Ok_Competition6823 6d ago

Yes sir

3

u/PermissionSafe2183 6d ago

Can someone explain this process? Is this just some sort of exemption u have to have then import from America

3

u/AresV92 5d ago

There was a pinned post but the mods removed it for some reason. It is a province specific exemption for purchasing handguns for sport shooting.

1

u/PlantainAcceptable62 5d ago

What province?

Buy ones with conversion kits available...

2

u/IAMURBUNKLE 5d ago

Which ones? Seems like 22 to 9m is almost impossibleĀ

2

u/AresV92 5d ago

Glock 44V, S&W M&P 22 Compact, Ruger LCP II. There are lots. You'd probably need to import through I Run Guns . Com or similar importer. I get what you mean about barrel/recoil spring/slide conversions not being available at Canadian gun shops. You'd probably need a .22LR version of the 9mm gun. If you compete in ipsc you can get 9mm I think.

2

u/GreenCactus223 5d ago

that is an excellent idea. a lot of work but worth it.

3

u/Geralt-of-Rivai 6d ago

Agreed, but if you don't own any handguns and always wanted onez what else are you going to do. If you already have handguns then I'm not going through all this to grab another 22 lol

1

u/GreenCactus223 5d ago

Im surprised how much the conversion kits are. More than I paid for my pistols.

6

u/FroBro243 6d ago

Curious how your TX22 will run. Mine is very ammo sensitive. Great looking collection!

5

u/Ok_Competition6823 6d ago

Haven’t shot it yet, just got it yesterday need to wait for the physical paper on the mail before I can take it to the range.

2

u/FroBro243 6d ago

Fair enough. Yea I have the older gen of the TX22 Competition and have found it very sensitive. The cheapest ammo it will run is the Federal Auto Match, and even then it has some stove piping issues. CCI, and higher quality Federal run very well, as well as SK/Norma/Eley pistol offerings. If I choose to run cheap bulk ammo, it will stove pipe/FTE every other round.

Nice

BC? AB? I need more ON posts on the exemption.

I also don’t know which 3 I want. I’ve got one settled already that’s a must acquire, but for the remaining allocation I’m trying to choose from the Mark IV, TX22, 502 tactical, Ruger 617, beretta 87T, and Colt King Cobra Target 6ā€.

Too many to choose from. I know you can reapply the next year or over some specific interval to try more models as you progress in the sport, so I’m n out sure which I want for my first round.

2

u/lotosotol 6d ago

Yes, what about AB, BC?

3

u/Dizzy-Wedding5769 6d ago

Great now people will stop buying antiques to shoot

3

u/Elbro_16 6d ago

My 502 should be approved this week, and I have a Taurus revolver on the way

2

u/GordoBlue 6d ago

Noice! Damnn.... I want that ruger. Maybe time to get off my lazy ass and try to get exception. Where did you buy?

Congrats!!

2

u/HaliRumble 5d ago

NS here.. Just going to blatantly assume I can't do whatever this is until somebody tells me otherwise.

2

u/SixEyeSassquatch 5d ago

Theres clubs that do the bullseye, but i havent seen anyone post about it.

4

u/Thereal_Stormm006 6d ago

I’m saving my crave for handguns for the US.

I will not settle for a .22; I want 9mm, .45, 10mm, .357 Magnum, .41 Magnum & .44 Magnum handguns. If I can’t have them in Canada, at least I’ll legally own them in the land of the free & the home of the brave

4

u/PrestigiousStatus711 6d ago

It is much better. Can get ARs too!

-5

u/Cheap_Responses 6d ago

Not so free anymore, especially if you plan to emigrate there

3

u/BigGuy204 6d ago

TX22 go brrrttttt.

1

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears 6d ago

How long did the process take for you once you received the exemption and then sought to purchase from IRG? It sounds to me like people have different answers about transfer/registration timing

u/mustafazoom 6d ago

1

1

u/Ok_Competition6823 6d ago

Haven’t shot any yet will update after

1

u/Disastrous-Panic-87 5d ago

Don't know if cz shadow 2 sells from.factory.with kadet slide... Would be worth a call.

FM has some if not mistaken

P226 has one

Some 22lr.1911 can be upgraded

1

u/Ok_Competition6823 5d ago edited 5d ago

Cz shadow one was discontinued a long time ago and rare to find. FN? Nope. P226 yes, good luck finding one tho, I have one. 1911 22lr you can’t upgrade to a 9mm šŸ‘

1

u/LGzJethro66 5d ago

Not approved for competition

1

u/crasheralex 5d ago

Please explain like I'm 5 for someone in ontario. How can I still get new handguns? I have a new mission in life.

1

u/Ok_Competition6823 5d ago

1

u/Bepisnivok 5d ago

Im sorry, what. I've been way too busy with work. What's the process here ? Any Alberta luck on this ?

1

u/Ashs_Hitbox13 4d ago

How do I do this in Ab?

1

u/CupcakeAway1318 4d ago

Where did you find the Taurus? I’ve been trying to find one to import!

1

u/Ok_Competition6823 3d ago

It was really hard but I did find it, message me I might let it go. I got too many guns. It’s brand new unfired

1

u/Papabandit_ 6d ago edited 6d ago

Getting a handgun exemption just to end up buying a Taurus šŸ’€

4

u/Ok_Competition6823 6d ago

I guess buddy doesn’t see the other 2 guns too. Plus I have a 226 🤔

2

u/Papabandit_ 6d ago

I can't speak on the FN cause I got no experience with them and I wouldn't shit on a Ruger cause they're nice and fun guns. and mb my grammar on the shitpost comment was wrong

2

u/IAMURBUNKLE 5d ago

How’s the 226? Did you get it from irg?Ā

-3

u/Curious_Joe2020 6d ago
