Just cleaned up the Remington. Can't seem to date the gun properly though.

Remington 870 Wingmaster in 2.75". Got it for a great deal that I couldn't pass up. I could tell that this gun probably hadn't been cleaned for at least 20-30 years.

Anyways, I'm having problems dating the gun. I provided photos of the serial number and the barrel stamp on the left side. I know that the corn cob forend 870s stopped being made in like the 50s/60s but when I use the barrel stamp code to date it....it's coming up as a 1974 manufacture date. However, I'm pretty sure that the corncob forends had stopped being made by then and also I don't think that the vented rib barrels were a thing yet in the 50s/60s with the corncob forends.

I also can't seem to find a similar configuration of how mine looks anywhere online. All the closest models I have seen don't have the vented rib. My personal theory is that this is some kind of Frankenstein 870 that has a barrel from 1974 but the rest of the gun (receiver, stock, forend, etc.) is from the 50s/60s. Also, the left side barrel stamp code has a 62 number which I initially thought it meant that it was made in 1962.

Anyways, if someone has more info on dating this old 870, feel free to let me know.

My guess would have been mid 70s as well.
More than likely parts were swapped out at some point over the years. Quality 870 you have IMO.

Ive got one from that time frame too, shes a crusty musty beater I got for cheap and it still goes bang. I can’t complain about that🤷

I'm starting to think that it is a 1974 date 870 but the wood furniture was swapped out from an older 870 from the 50s/60s. I'm pretty sure all the 870s from the 1970s didn't come with the corncob forend.

Your receiver was manufactured between 1974 and 1977 based on the "T" serial prefix, and the "V" suffix confirms it is a standard 12-gauge receiver sized for 2 ¾-inch shells.

The "XY" roll stamp on the left side of your barrel indicates a manufacture date of December 1974 (where "X" is December and "Y" represents the year 1974)

Yea I think this a 1974 made 870 but the wood furniture was swapped out. The wood seems to be in too good of a shape compared to the receiver.

You're probably right. The groved "Corncob" forends were standard on early 50's original Wingmasters.

By the 60's, Remington transitioned away from the corncob to a smoother, grooved forend style.

By the mid-1970s (your receiver's era), standard Wingmasters featured checkered walnut wood (usually with a fleur-de-lis pattern.

Your seller like the 50's esthetic I guess.

Google says Remington Wingmaster with serial number T062135V and XY roll stamp on the barrel was manufactured in December 1978

I got 1974 made according to the XY stamp but I think the wood furniture is not original and was swapped out.

Ease into it. Dinner, some flowers eventually. But don't come across as desperate. Eventually you'll be able to strip and lube. Takes time my friend

Going to go a different direction here. But that stock set looks like a wingmaster police that someone put a longer barrel on.

I think you're thinking about the round style corncob forend. Which is different from what you have.

Yea the forend being from a police model could make sense but for the buttstock all the photos I've seen show that the buttstock has a recoil pad and this one doesn't it. I'm thinking that maybe someone had the wood furniture taken off an old 50s/60s 870 and got the two pieces refinished?
