Competitions/matches ISPC - Beginner

Good afternoon,

I am interested in getting my black badge and becoming an ISPC member. However, with the current handgun bans im unsure of the organization has been affected due to the freeze on handguns. I can’t find any info about using shotguns in the organization within Ontario.

Is it still possible to become a member? I have my PAL and RPAL, but I don’t own a handgun. I do own a shotgun.

There is a IPSC black badge course going on in September at Guelph rod and gun. And if you can borrow a pistol, gear and 1000 rounds of ammo you can get your normal black badge. There is a category called Mini rifle which is semi auto 22’s, (Derya TM22, Ruger 10/22, etc) that you can use in competitions which allows you to be “competitive” without possessing a handgun.

Are IPSC Shotgun matches being run in Ontario?

You have to shoot once a year to keep your badge up to date, right? If there are no matches, it is a bit moot to get the Shotgun Black Badge.

I wonder if any GTA clubs will be running this course.

As for mini-rifle, I do not think anyone is doing that in Ontario yet, which is a shame because that is what a lot of new shooters are left with.

Also, it seems this new course does not allow you to shoot mini-rifle; it is shotgun only.

Shotgun matches are being rolled out at some clubs afaik. Barrie Gun Club is in the process of it with dates being scheduled for members currently - not sure about official matches, etc. as I'm new to IPSC in general.

My club recently started doing shotgun matches too, but I don't think they're IPSC sanctioned.

I think it is a big miss for IPSC not to include mini-rifle, rifle, or the other disciplines as part of this badge. So when mini-rifle is rolled out in Ontario, does it mean Shotgun BB holders will have to take yet another course?

Honestly you should spend your time in other shooting disciplines. Even if you can borrow one for the class (which is not simple as the owner needs to stay with you for the entire duration) there's no way to acquire one (9mm) to keep doing competitions other than renting from a friend/member with a temporary transfer.

There’s usually someone who can loan you a pistol for competitions, just message the match organizer asking about it and they could help you out. The biggest issue with the freeze is for practicing, it can be a bit hard to find a loaner for that.

IPSC Ontario has started running black badge courses for shotgun and I believe when you complete that it allows you to compete in IPSC shotgun events only. It doesn’t get you the holster qualification. If you complete the handgun or “normal” one it allows you to shoot shotgun and mini rifle.

The odd part is you have to email the Black badge coordinator to know when these courses are happening or you have to ask a member as they’re posted on the IPSC Ontario members page. The members page pretty much tells you all the matches happening in Ontario and all the black badge courses taking place. Some black badge courses can also be taking place at a club and aren’t posted on the members page like the one in Guelph.
