Recurring FAQ Thread - Post your questions here for PAL/RPAL application, timelines, CFSC/CFSRC, references & requirements, or general new to firearms ownership-type questions
This thread will be used for any Frequently Asked Questions, including PAL/RPAL applications, CFSC/CFRSC requirements, storage/transport, open ended "what gun should I buy first", or other general new to firearms ownership questions. It recurs every 14 days.

Exporting firearms, ammunition, parts and accessories from the US: most items are controlled under ITAR and you cannot, as an individual, export these items from the USA. Canada does not care in most cases. If you attempt to bring any of these items across the border yourself and you are caught, you will face prison time in the US. If you wish to export items from the USA, use a broker such as IRUNGUNS, Aztech, or Prophet River.
If you took your CFSC and lost the paperwork, you can still apply for your PAL. Both your instructor and the CFP retain copies, you can request a copy by contacting either one. There is no expiration date on the paperwork, you do not have to retake the course. Updated list of scam websites is here.
If you have new scam sites to add, please message the mod team. Be careful: only use reputable sites to purchase things online. It is illegal to manufacture a non-restricted, restricted, or prohibited firearm.
Any posts or comments asking about the legality of making a firearm other than a reproduction antique will be removed. It was not always illegal, which is why you will find old posts regarding this topic. Rest assured, it is illegal now. Do not attempt.

For interprovincial restricted transfers, which CFO office processes the transaction?
IF I live in BC and purchase a restricted firearm from AB, does AB or BC CFO process the transfer?

I have read CBSA grabs anything slightly AR15 related but gun parts generally aren't controlled

If I had a friend who had changed their address a couple months ago but forgot to do so on his PAL, no Restricteds, how much of a pickle would they be in

If I want to get better at shooting, whether for hunting or target shooting, am I better off getting a Tikka CTR .223 or a CZ457 precision 22LR rifle? Obviously I can practice far more with the 22 due to the cheaper ammo, but I'll be limited to 50-100m. The .223 is obviously as cheap as it gets for a round that will permit me to practice on targets in the 200-500m range.

Is PMC Bronze an adequate .223 training round, or will shooting with less consistent sub match quality ammo make it difficult to learn, calculate wind drift, etc?

PMC Bronze .223 is FMJ (Full Metal Jacket). Good for plinking for cheap, not good if you want to precision shoot. Match-grade .223 is what you need to look for, but they cost more. Yes, still cheaper than a .308 or a 6.5, but they will cost over $1 per round.
If you range is limited 200m, I say don't bother getting a centrefire if you want to save money. With a 22 you can stretching up to 200 with a lot of challenge already. I think a centrefire would be worth it if you have at least 500m range.

I have 80acres of forested land and would like to get the process started on a trap line and an eventual ATC.
My question is with said ATC I would have an exemption for handgun purchases. In the event I can no longer manage the trap line or if it's burnt down from a forest fire do the handguns still stay under my RPAL or is the exemption removed and handguns have to be surrendered?

The handgun freeze stops you from getting more handguns. Any you already have are not effected, so you'd keep whatever you have when your line is gone.
Your atc would not be renewed once your tap line is gone.

If you do come out to Alberta, I highly recommend Dave Ferro Safety in Edmonton. Dude is super nice, really funny and engaging, and makes the whole course a really enjoyable experience. Plus, they have a box of goodies to pick from if you get 100% on your written and/or practical exam lol

when the time comes to renew a PAL and say the person wants to upgrade to an RPAL, do they need to provide only the restricted course completion proof or must they also provide the NR course completed at the time they got the PAL?

The fact that you have a pal is the proof you completed the nr course. I think there's a way you can specify 'on file' or something.
But i believe you'll have to apply for the rpal. It's not just renew with the extra restricted endorsement.

Question about ATC’s because I’m genuinely curious.
If a person has an Authorization To Carry, either for wilderness protection or the unobtainum protection of life, is it listed on that person’s PAL? Will it be listed on the back of the physical PAL? Or is it a separate piece of paper like the conditions of your licence or an ATT?
I’d assume always carrying a letter, especially out in the wild would be burdensome, but I’ve never had, nor will ever qualify for an ATC, so I’m interested to know the answer.
