Misc Moving to USA - Options on Handguns
We are moving to the USA and I have filed a atf form 6 to bring most of my firearms. They accepted most but two hand guns and the AR and one Winchester SXP of all things! What are my options I obviously don’t want to turn them in. Is there a way to sell those handguns in Canada before we go?

Certain auction houses in Canada will sell your handguns as parts kits and only destroy the frame.

You can consign them at auction like Switzer’s or Kidd family auction. If they’re .22s, there’s a few provinces that are easy to get exemptions for. Which pistols are they if I may inquire?

Probably best to consign on one of the aforementioned auction sites (side note, it’s crazy they wouldn’t accept those two pistols). You can also sell to exempted businesses, I know adventarms corp gunsmithing in Coombs BC is licensed to buy, as well as some ranges

Can you strip all the parts and take them with you? Then just buy a frame in the US and rebuild your pistol(s)? You can destroy the gun portion (usually the frame but it depends) and just report it to the RCMP as destroyed.

Clearly NAL, but if it's not a gun by the US and Canadian legal definition then you would not have to declare it as a gun when crossing the border. It would be just metal parts .
What is considered to be a gun can be complicated. I've used irunguns in the past to navigate the legal channels. If you can afford the fees it's a great service.

Gun parts can still be restricted, so you may not have to declare a gun, but you would have to declare gun parts.

What is an example of a restricted gun part? Are you thinking of scopes under ITAR?

Pretty sure you need import paperwork for any firearms part, unless exempted. Barrels are one such example you need paperwork for. Firearms parts are considered defense articles.
Go read ATF Form 6 as a starting point.

It can't be that black and white. I shipped a cz bolt to the US for warranty repair. Didn't need a customs form. And I got an extractor from Ruger in the mail.
This was well before COVID and it's possible that they tightened the rules. But you can get rails and other parts of amazon.com so not everything is excluded.

Like, I said, there are some exemptions. Warranty repair iirc is one of them, low value items too.

That's the way to go. So sick of these posts from people about moving from the US to Canada or from Canada to some European country with insane license levels, asking about how they can acquire/keep their ar15 lol. If you move and want more firearm rights/freedoms, moving to a gun friendly American state like Florida is the only option. I saw this one post about moving from Canada to France because they were disillusioned with Canadian gun restrictions and then all the comments were about the lengthy hoops he had to jump through to get a semi in France.

Hoops there might be, but now I suggest you compare how hard it is to get an AR in France vs here. Or, you know, most semis in general.

It’s been years in the making. Things have just changed here so much since I moved back to Canada in 2012. Came back young. Started a family and now it’s time to go back. We are heading to Florida and I’m so excited about the opportunity for more firearm freedoms.

You are obviously talking about my post in https://www.reddit.com/r/EuropeGuns/. Firearms are actually not the main reason for the move. Our terrible healthcare system is, family member dying here waiting for treatment, they can get surgery in 4-6 weeks in France. Aslo, France has legal suppresors with no permit, handguns, AK's, AR's, 30 round magazines and more. Definitely more hoops then Canada circa 2015 but still better in someways (I.E mags, suppresors and AK's). Canada today is done for gun owners, maybe we get grandfathered post supreme court but this passion is dead here in 10 years tops if nothing changes in a massive way. Oh and French conservative party is leading in the polls, can only get better in France. Not to mention I can live in Poland or CZ down the road if I want as an EU citizen. Good luck moving to the U.S without 1 million $+ or a specialized trade or skill...

Curious about another option, someone could probably tune in with more information.
Say someone in Canada had an RPAL, and you worked out some suitable compensation with them... That person would look after the handgun for you, maybe even take it to the range from time to time, but it's still your gun.
If that's legal, I'd be interested in "helping" you out and paying for the privilege.

Luckily I was able to get my dual citizenship, long process and story. We are just waiting on my wife’s green card from Canada now. The exit taxes can be scary. But luckily most things like primary residence, RRSPs, TFSAs and RPPs are generally exempt

Technically called deemed disposition. You "sell" all your assets and then rebuy them, paying any capital gains.
It is only the gains that get taxed and being capital gains, only 50% of it is actually taxed (used to be 25%, blame Trudeau).

Oh shit this is an option? I recently got my GC and was thinking of using irunguns to import all my old guns but atf form 6 can cheaply import em all?
Any info on it?
Edit: Ah crap, looks like this was something I shoulda done before entering the US. RIP, gotta go through an importer. Grats on the move though, are you a US Citizen or also immigrating? We moved back around 2021.

Sell the SXP privately.
Have an auction sell the handguns for you.
Strip the AR15 down to parts, sell the parts (or auction them for a low effort sale), and turn the upper and lower over to the police.

Good luck with how that legal experiment plays out.
It doesn't pad the buyback numbers, police just destroy it and keep track for their records. Participating in the buyback pads the numbers.
