Buy recommendations What do we think of these SKS mods?

I'm itching for an SKS and would adore owning an original, unbastardized example. But the looks and tinkering options of these aftermarket builds got me intrigued.

They're priced the same as any other SKS usually, but I've heard bad things about the quality of some of them. Are these prices fair and a good option for a first time SKS owner? Or should I stay traditional?

That fab defense build is pretty good if you don’t like to do much modding. Already had the barrel length reduced and the fab stock has a built in paddle release.

I was gonna buy it but I was lucky enough to scoop up the Sks-D for 1400 that day

Any more info on that? Like when and how much? Will they match your handguards?

Around 400 to 450 taxes and shipping in (Canada)

Hardwood buttstock, pistol grip, upper and lower handguards. Rear pic rail for pic buttstocks, user can pick whatever they want (I'm also making folding buffer tubes that attach to pic rails, separate part). AK grip compatible. MLOK slots on both handguards.

Steel sheet metal main body. Matte black powder coat. Looking to preinstall AK side rail mounts so users can use an AK side scope mount.

Should be available late July? Maybe? I'll upload some pictures later today of my work in progress.

will it work with type-D/-M models?

Maybe? Can check my post, I uploaded a pic of the magwell. If not its just 1.5mm sheet steel. Can easily be filed wider

Do you have pics of your latest design? I'd like to make a Canadian commie fudd.

The Bubba 3000 Special Edition

The first rifle is a Russian sks in a fab defence chassis. Its actually not a bad price, if I were looking I’d consider that one

I understand the purist point of view of the good Ol'reliable SKS but this exact build is one of the cleanest if not the cleanest build i have seen on a tactical SKS, props to him, i personally like it

That's what I was thinking...doesn't look like the typical infamous plastic mods you can find at any gun shop.

2

u/hunterofsteelhead Jul 01 '26

I like French ticklers

1

u/Jay_Nicolas Jul 01 '26

Are they moddable?

1

u/hunterofsteelhead Jul 01 '26

Many people buy an sks and mod it then eventually return it to stock. Buy a stock one keep the parts and do mods that can be reversed down the line when eventually your tastes change

2

u/Jay_Nicolas Jul 01 '26

I see your logic, and raise you just "me buying a second SKS" later

0

u/starw24-ps4 Jul 01 '26

Same as any other Sks is. They carry more value than a standard Chinese though so makes less sense to mod

2

u/JaxIsLoud Jul 01 '26

Personally not a fan of either of those stocks. But you do you. There is a new chassis system bound to hit the market soon that will let you have AK vibes and it won't be much compared to some of these new systems

Buy a French tickler and get a fab Defense stock if you want an aftermarket one it’s the best your gonna get besides the original wood of course

1

u/ovjho Jul 01 '26

SKS good as is. No larp will ever be cooler than stock.

2

u/StevenMcStevensen al Jul 01 '26

This. I love it as it came from the factory, and mine will stay that way.

1

u/Murray3-Dvideos Jul 01 '26

It may not be the cheapest option.... but its usually best to buy a factory condition SKS.... shoot it a bunch... and then modify it to improve on any deficiencys you feel it has (based on your particular wants and needs) if any.

1

u/ExtremeCommercial821 Jul 01 '26

Noted! Was kind of feeling that.

1

u/UsernameIllRemeber Jul 01 '26

Nyet, rifle is fine.

1

u/Swellchapo95 Jul 01 '26

Anything other than an original config sks is absolute hideous trash imho

1

u/Iokua_CDN Jul 03 '26

I mostly agree, but I've also loved seeing the boyd stock sks rifles...  they look fun and unique

Worth about half that.

-1

u/Rippin_Fat_Farts Jul 01 '26

C'mon it's not even worth that much

-2

u/Response-Cheap Jul 01 '26

I meant with accessories included. Bone stock SKS should still be 3-350. With a rail, an optic and fab defence stock I'd say it'd be worth between 500 and 650 depending on how well it's setup, and if the optic is decent.

Regardless, 1300 is stupid expensive for any SKS no matter how its set up. Unless someone is selling bubba'd SKS's with ACOGs and Leupolds on them..

1

u/ExtremeCommercial821 Jul 01 '26

I know the $350-$500 range is the "old price" but to this day, I've never seen one under $600. Most are quite abused and uncared for at that price.

I know a couple older guys who paid peanuts back in the day but the going rate for a clean example is hovering around $1000 these days.

1

u/Response-Cheap Jul 01 '26

I know. And it's a rip-off. Used to be able to get a crate of them for that price. Honestly unless you're sitting on a pile of 7.62x39 I wouldn't even bother. You could get something brand new by a reputable company for that price.

2

u/ExtremeCommercial821 Jul 01 '26

How I long for the "old days."

The first firearm I ever fired was an SKS, so I have a weird itch to own one among various other reasons.

2

u/Response-Cheap Jul 01 '26

I'm not saying you shouldn't buy one if you really want one, if you can find one at a reasonable price. But don't buy one at $1300. These guys on gunpost are scalping them at 1300. Total rip. Wait til there's a sale and get something basic in the $6-800 range (😢). At 1300 you could buy a homesteader or something, if you're hell bent on buying a semi in this market.. At least it would be brand new, and backed by a warranty. Just my 2 cents.

1

u/ExtremeCommercial821 Jul 01 '26

Appreciate that, mostly I like the 7.62 and any semi-auto with that caliber is pretty highly priced so the SKS seems somewhat attractive. Glad to know Gunpost has an inflated SKS price culture, I'm still learning new places to buy outside of retail shops.

1

u/Response-Cheap Jul 02 '26

You can still spot the odd honest guy selling an SKS on GP, but you gotta be careful. There's a few guys on there that are just constantly flipping guns for way more than they're worth. And since the bans in 2025, SKS is the most popular semi on the market. Pretty sure you can find a new custom SKS on GP for 13-1400 almost every week. Most of the time it's the same guys. Probably sitting on a container full of them, tacking on aftermarket parts and charging triple what they paid for them.

-1

u/Rippin_Fat_Farts Jul 01 '26

You can buy these for less than $100 in the states. That's the true worth of an SKS. I'm sure there's places in the world where they give these out free when you buy a bag of rice.

4

u/Response-Cheap Jul 01 '26

I'm talking about reality man. Do you think Loblaws is going to start giving away SKS's with bags of rice? Ffs.

Might make me shop there ?
