Buy recommendations Ruger scout vs CVA sr80
Right now I am between these two rifles
CVA cascade sr 80 308
Ruger American scout gen 2 308
I like the scout rifle concept for its lightweight design and shorter barrel for use in the back country, also as an alternative “battle rifle” considering we can’t get AR 10s anymore.
Biggest factor leaning me to the Ruger now is the full length rail, non proprietary mag, and shorter barrel

I would give the CVA a shot. After buying a ruger american ranch gen 2, I have no idea why they get support honestly. The roughest and most finicky bolt in my entire collection, the squishiest and creepiest trigger hands down out of any of my modern rifles, and at best I can get a 1.5" group consistently. So based kn that experience alone I'd avoid the Ruger American series since a savage axis is a smoother action even

You might want to consider sending it in for warranty if its worse than a savage. Theyre definitely not that bad. At leastvthe umpteen ive had in the shop have definitely been way smoother than the savages.

I think it's an inherit design flaw with the 5.56 models. The bolt is scalloped to work with the STANAG mags which causes excessive slop in the bolt, mixed with the super rushed machining Ruger has always had on their american series it creates a recipie to bind if the bolt isn't ran right. The other short actions like .308 are better but the rough machining is still a thing ruger should rock out

Maybe. We've only had the 1 556 so far show up and i dont recall thinking it was rough but it was a bit ago

Looking to buy my first bolt gun and have narrowed down to the same too; anxiously waiting for a few more reviews to come out on the gen 2 Ruger.

Maybe you guys can help me, my biggest hesitation with the 16” is being in CA suppressor isn’t an option. How much more muzzle blast comes out of 16” vs 18”? I’m not recoil sensitive either but I take a lot of first time shooters out and from what I’ve seen the cva is likely quite a bit more forgiving.

Might be a little late, but have you considered the Savage 110 scout? The magpul or regular edition.
I'm currently in the same position looking for something to help me decide.

Franchi Momentum All-Terrain and the Sabatti Rover Scout you should also consider
Or go for a used M77 scout.

Both a touch out of my budget, also looked for a M77 scout but can’t find one less then 2000.

Fair enough. Between the two you’re considering I’d personally go CVA but I think both would be solid choices

I don't think you can really go wrong with the Ruger and Ruger Americans have a pretty decent aftermarket if you ever want to tinker with and upgrade it
