Investment gun

I’m in a very lucky position to be looking into the idea of an investment gun. So I’m looking for some ideas and advice. If you were going to invest in something but would also shoot it maybe once a year with a budget of $15-20k, what would you get? If it was also “ban-proof” that would be nice. Hit me with ideas team!

I’d put 75% of that into retirement savings and 25% into a 3-5k gun like an M1 or a lower end valmet

20k is a lot of money to spend on an individual gun

Thisbwas my first thought too. Tons of bespoke shotguns in that price range or higher, and these are as ban proof as you can possibly be

Depending on its condition, a nice, all-matching, Canadian Long Branch No 4 Mk 1 (T) WW2 Enfield Sniper Rifle will set you back approximately $18,000 for a pristine example. I personally cannot think of a more practical, ban-resistant (unfortunately nothing is ban-proof) and historically relevant "Investment Firearm" that will provide you with tremendous pride of ownership. You can expand the Rifle, Sling, Transit Chest and Scope Case (a standard $18K investment) into a complete set of issued sniper kit, to include:

- Spotting Scope (Scout Regiment 4-Draw Scope, or Canadian C1 Spotting Scope with Instrument Stand Tripod)

- Compass

- Timepiece (Pocket Watch or Wrist-Watch)

- Binoculars

- Dension Smock x 2

- Bayonet

- Cleaning Kit

- Spare Parts Tin

- Clasp Knife

- Rifle Case

- Bayonet

Your market for selling a gun that appreciates beyond $15K - 20K is very small. Even if you do find a unicorn gun, unloading it at the perceived value in the future will be very difficult and costly.

The fact that you're planning on shooting the gun will also lower its value and increase the chance of damage.

I would put the money into an ETF or even property instead or like others have suggested buying multiple cheaper firearms that have a chance of individually appreciating like a crate of SKSes assuming they don't get banned.

Antique large frame handguns in shootable calibers - Colt SAA and New Army, S&W No.3, Reichsrevolver, that sort of thing. The market will only go up with the handgun freeze and the supply will continue to shrink.

Failing that milsurps are way more popular with the younger generations than boomers and have tripled in value in 15 years, although I’m not they haven’t peaked.

Don’t buy commemorative guns, they’re always overpriced and overproduced, you’ll lose your shirt. Ditto cope guns, they’re still at risk of being banned and if they’re not the values will still go down as more hit the market. It’s a loss either way. Ditto the SKS, prices are inflated right now but wither they’ll ban them, or more will come in and people will stop worrying about them being banned.

Cowboy guns like old Winchesters used to be the blue chip but they’re way less collected now as the boomers age out. They might have a comeback, especially if more western video games come out, but it’s a gamble.

High end sporting shotguns will retain value well but I think that market’s likely to stay small but stable so not much growth in your investment. High end hunting rifles ditto, with the caveat that there are fewer and fewer hunters long term it might decline.

Whatever you buy, get something that YOU really love. That way, if the value doesn't increase you'll still be glad that you bought it.

Non-semi auto military surplus rifles (excellent condition only), specifically world war 2 era.

There will only ever be less and less of them as time goes on. WW2 is a historic event many people get into and is a popular topic. Scarcity + collectibility = value

Nothing is ban proof. Invest that in the market or whatever. Spending that kind of money on a firearm for monetary gains makes zero sense.

If you insist on going that route, buy lots of a certain rifle in an older soviet caliber.

Antique revolvers are a good option. They're only increasing in price, especially if they function well. I got a colt 1892 for $2800 this year and they're already well above $3000 now. I would say they are ban proof more than most firearms since they are not regulated at all except when it comes to storage and discharge laws they are regulated as if they're NR

I would recommend getting a great specimin of a Valmet Hunter in 223. A Valmet because obviously it is rare. A "Hunter" because I think it is safer than the M78 in terms of future bans (I know they're both equally exempted but nothing is guaranteed for the future. A "featureless" Hunter would logically be more resilient to potential bans). A 223 because it is the rarer than the larger hunting calibers (like the 308 which is more common) and in general a 223 semiauto is super rare in current Canada. Also get a bunch of 223 genuine Valmet mags.

Tikkas are fine guns, but they will not hold value any better than a stock Honda Civic will.

Nothing against them, but they're just generic run of the mill, middle-tier quality guns.
