30-06, wanted to get used to a bigger caliber before taking the hunting course, couldn’t pass up the sale on this

30-06 always just plinking before, but want to get used to a bigger caliber and take the hunting course later this summer

Kind of scary looking. Why would you need anything larger than a .22? Or an air-rifle for that matter? Or a nerf gun really?
