Had to get the Briley extension through an importer. Not available otherwise up here in the frozen north.

Oh that is COOL! I do want a 10 gauge at some point, mainly because no one offers an 8 gauge š
comments about old punt guns and botique custom shops or guntubers shooting 4 bores or Russian ks-23 guns (ultimate dream haha) need not apply, im talking a shotgun for which i could buy shells at my local gun storeā¦sadly 10 gauge is the limit, and hard to find the actual gunā¦

You can find a. 8 ga or larger punt in Canada. Keep looking in the usual places. Patience young one.

Oh Iām sure you could but as per my initial comment, where would one source ammo or even reloading supplies for such a beast? Iām not being rhetorical, Iād love to know ššš
As far as recoil and mag dumps, I suspect that big heavy 10 wouldnāt be nearly as abusive to the shooter as some of the super light 12 gauges with turkey loafs haha. At the store I work at weāve got those stupid Charles Daly break action single shots with 12 inch barrels. Canāt weigh more than 4 pounds I donāt think. And weāve got 2 oz turkey shellsā¦the masochistic recoil junkie in me wants to buy one just to ride the lightning haha but I have too many other things I plan to waste money on that are more important.

Ok, so its all handloads with 10ga. All components are available in Canada. 10ga cheddite hulls and primers. I cast my #4 buck. You can modify a lee load-all to 10ga

And I encourage you to shoot a 3oz 10ga and let me know your comments on recoil.

Right on. No I know the 10 gauge stuff can be readily handloaded or still bought as factory loaded shells (we have some 10 gauge waterfowl loads at the store I work at).
I was talking about the 8 gauge punt gun you mentioned in your reply to the initial comment. I honestly just donāt know if the components are out there and thought maybe you did.
I would absolutely love the chance to shoot a 3 oz ten gauge sometime, I like big guns, big recoil, itās sort of like hot peppers (which I also grow and enjoy) - thereās something fun for people like me about seeing how much you can withstand/how close to your limit you can get.
I havenāt found it with recoil yet. Stout 45-70 out of a levergun hasnāt seemed half as bad as itās made out to be, a featherweight .375 HH is certainly stout but not intimidatingly so, my .300 RUM is an absolute sweetheart with little recoil, 358 Norma isnāt bad, 3.5 inch waterfowl loads out of a Benelli supernova were underwhelming compared to how horrific people claimed the recoil would beā¦.the 50BMG doesnāt count for me because the one I was privileged to shoot in the good old days pushed me back a bit but doesnāt actually hit your shoulder with any violence at all, but holy muzzle blast thatās an experience of its own.
Up to a point recoil is very subjective, hence my comments about heavy 12 gauge loads in very light weight single shot 12 gauge shotguns. They come at you so FAST. By comparison my .450 Ackley elephant rifle (a little bigger case capacity than a 458 Lott) objectively generates significantly more recoil than a shotgun BUT truly itās less abusive than some, think getting shoved hard vs getting punched fast.
My newest old gun that I havenāt even got a chance to shoot yet might be a handful. A Remington 600 Mohawk (late 60s production, 18 inch barrel, 6 pounds) in .350 Remington magnum. By all accounts itās a stomper being that light and short. Canāt wait to try it out and see what it can do!
If I ever do get the opportunity to shoot a 10 gauge with 3 oz loads Iāll be sure to give a full report haha, congrats on a very unique shotgun, and cool mag extension, I didnāt know they even made those for 10s.

Haha. So 8ga is a BP special load. Find a gun that can handle smokeless 10ga,, then find a BP load for 8ga plus whatever projectiles you can find

8ga is illegal in Canada unless antique. Percussion pre 1898 or if modern has to be flint/match/wheellock.

Thatās what I thought about 8ga, that it was blackpowder. I know they use some weird version of it for blasting out industrial kilns but besides that sort of thing did anyone ever make a āmodernā sporting 8 gauge meant for smokeless loads? I know I could ask google but you seem to know a fair bit about the oddball shotgun stuff. This is out of my usual wheelhouse, Iām a rifle looney and handloading nut for centerfire rifle cartridges but have not yet gotten into reloading shotshells nor have I ever worked with black powder anything. I also do have casting lead on my to do list one day, specifically with shotgun slugs and heavy .458 pills in mind. I imagine casting for number 4 buck would be a time consuming endeavour, or no? Do yāall have to cast one pellet at a time?
I tell myself itād be a way to save money but if reloading for the last 16 years now has taught me anything itās that if a personās sole motivation is to save money, reloading is the wrong tree to be barking up š¤£. I do it for the immense satisfaction of it all and the fact that it opens up so many weird guns that you couldnāt even find ammo for otherwise.
