Buy recommendations Princess Auto safe
While I was at princess auto recently I couldn't help but notice the crazy price on their 20 gun safe. Ive been looking at safes recently not only for my guns but for personal documents and stuff. Wondering if its a good buy or if the typical princess auto quality is something I should be worried about.

Looks like a really good deal for a fireproof safe. Reviews seem to be ok, I'm going to pick one of these up. They are $488.88 online so this is a great price. Thanks for posting.

It was $488 yesterday. I just forgot a few things so I ran in there this morning and noticed the price was almost $100 less.

I like to use this website to track prices on Princess Auto:
https://www.paprices.ca/If it was on sale recently and you ask the checkout to check the last sale price, they usually give it to you. Unfortunately this safe hasn't seen a price drop, so looks like it's an in-store special.

Just want to clarify that at least in my experience of 3 safes that none of the "fire rated" safes are worth fucking anything. It's a 30m fire rating and if your house goes it will burn far longer than that. Source: lost not less than 10 firearms in 3 safes in a house fire.
I just use a cabinet now. Save money and your back installing the thing.

For me its more about security than fireprotection. I recently had a break in and luckily none of my guns or documents were stolen. My neighbors weren't so lucky.

Check Cabela's/bass pro they go on sale several times per year. I believe they are built in China, all same quality.

Its basically the same price as the 18 gun cabinet at cabelas. If they're all the same quality I'll have to scoop this one up

Much better than the stackon-style cabinets. The fire resistance is accomplished with a drywall interior and a few mm of fiberglass insulation, so adjust expectations accordingly.
Some of the other box-store-brand better models have a water seal in the door and other improvements, so they're not all the same, but they're never this cheap.

Genuine question: is it wise to keep important, non-firearm related, items in a gun safe?
I used to keep cash, passport and various other valuables in my gun safe but stopped doing that when I learned more about the insanity of our gun laws.

My building recently had a break in and a lot of my neighbors personal documents were stolen. Im more worried about my neighbors than the government at this point.
2
u/MRcrete Jun 15 '26
Right, yeah fair enough. I live in the country so that's less of a concern for me.
6
u/EngFarm Jun 15 '26
It depends.
Your average gun safe complies with the bare minimum legal requirements. It's basically a high school locker, signals that it has expensive things inside it, and it's not very difficult to break into or carry away.
The safe pictured is too heavy to carry away, it has big dead bolts and not just a flimsy 1/4 turn sheet metal latch, and it has a fire rating.

u/airchinapilot Jun 15 '26
I don't understand the concern about keeping other things in the gun safe. Why do you think that would be a problem?
2
u/MRcrete Jun 15 '26
I'm not sure if it would be a problem or not. I'm far from knowledgable on this topic.
However, if the police are at your place to seize your firearms and perform whatever wellness checks they do and you've got $10k in cash in your safe beside your $20k in legally purchased rifles. I can imagine them taking it all only to let a judge sort it out at a later date. Whereas if the money is stored separately from the guns and there's no signs of it being the proceeds of crime, I would think the police would be more likely to leave it be after confiscating the rifles.

u/airchinapilot Jun 15 '26
That is an interesting point. I think you have something there. However, I tend to think also if it is a wellness check and they are going to seize firearms, they might check all secure places where firearms could be stored and your concern might also apply in all those cases even should you have a dedicated document safe.

Can tires comparable safe is 1300. This is a steal…I’d buy two if there was a princess auto near me.
5
u/EngFarm Jun 15 '26
For $1300 at Princess Auto you can buy the 84 gun safe. Same brand, similar construction, has a fire rating.
2
u/Rewindonemoretime Jun 15 '26
And I’d bet the farm they’re identical other than the name on the front.

u/CurlyWurly61 Jun 15 '26
That's an amazing price

I'd drive to the one in Ottawa but I know I'd 100% stop by ProBass and also pick up a new shotgun... I'm so bad with impulse buying!
2
u/1-800-eat-shit__ Jun 16 '26
You saved at least 750 on the safe so the gun is basically free if you think about it.

I’ve got the bigger version of that one. Definitely not fire proof. I would say it’s on par with a cabellas. Buy a bigger one if you can. I would be surprised if you can fit 10 guns in there.
That being said I am happy for what it is. The price was right and I don’t expect it to be fireproof.

I only have 3 guns at the moment and the makasi pretty order ate up the rest of my budget for the year. I am also living in an apartment at the moment so space is limited and precious.

u/Bull-RunTheJewels Jun 15 '26
Well this gets expensive fast. Save your money. You have guns. Don’t buy more. Just buy more ammo. Buy in bulk.

u/1-800-eat-shit__ Jun 16 '26
Ive got the makasi on pretty order and I plan on buying thousands of 556. Ill still be keeping an eye out for more Chinese sks food too. Ive also been collecting most of my 45LC brass for when I decide to pickup reloading.

u/CupcakeAway1318 Jun 15 '26
Absolutely love mine! I got the slightly bigger one, with the three pronged wheel to open. Beautiful safe for half the price of cabelas safes that are the same size
1
u/1-800-eat-shit__ Jun 15 '26
Yeah that one is also on sale. Just a little bit out of my budget right now

I bought one a couple months ago and I'm pretty happy. Just make sure to check the wires behind the number pad because the first one I picked up had broken wires and didn't work. Only found them after dragging it up the stairs in my house, not a fun day.

u/headbone Jun 15 '26
Does it have a key override option? The keypad electronics on my safe failed and I have to use the key every time now.

I think I paid more than that for a "40" gun cabinet that was on special at CT, years ago...

Any chance you got photos of the interior?
They have this at my local PA and I plan to pick it up but curious what the interior is like. Can't find any photos online

u/1-800-eat-shit__ Jun 16 '26

Your budget always drives everything.
What was it?
1
u/1-800-eat-shit__ Jun 16 '26
Definitely did want to spend more than $850. I was originally just looking at cabinets so this was definitely a good deal.

u/CheesecakeEasy8952 Jun 16 '26
Good price$
I have same unit but with rotary dial = cheat you can roll the dial 30 units to the side and it’s locked to all concerned! But roll dial back to magic # and it’s open PDQ!
Ya don’t have to do the entire combination to open. Wipe the keypad clean often, dirty fingers smudge tells the combo.

My buddy bought that safe, it's an odd setup for long guns, probably pull it out and make a plywood piece that'll work better.
My 18 gun safe has 11 in it now, its getting tight, as most of em are long barrel or have scopes.
1
u/Br7ian Jun 16 '26
Most of these cheap safes are just to keep honest people honest. Or keep them out of the hands of kids. If someone breaks in, they’ll be in to that safe in 5-10 mins if not less.

All I know is gun safes never fit what they say. I have 5 guns in a 10 gun safe and it feels full af 😂

u/microwave2016 Jun 15 '26
As long as you bolt it to the studs or floor you’re doing 100x better than someone who’s got one of these freestanding in a closet! Looks like a good purchase to me!

20 + 3 gun safe, so really it’s 10 + 1.5
