Are they really that bad?

It’s the ATI stock, typically on a Chinese SKS. Chinese SKS is not a bad gun, the stock isn’t terrible but there are some issues from what I hear, that from time to time they can lose alignment and whatnot. Still tho, for a budget gun, why not. I’d just personally rather get an original one in the original stock/ configuration

I hated my ati stock. There’s so many better options now that actually look nice.

Don't trust all you read, it's not an ATI stock
It's a Phantom Chassis, available at bullseyeNorth, made by crooked north customs

If you are going to get a new stock anyways, get the ATI version for cheaper than the wood version!

Mine came with a few mismatched parts which is fine but u may not be into that. The plastic stock is absolute garbage in my opinion though. I Highly recommend trying to find an original replacement or maybe investing in a more expensive Boyd’s one.

Any gun with down cast on a buffer tube stock is so ugly I want to drink gasoline, puke it up onto the gun, and then torch it.
This thing, Mesa shotgun stocks, ect. Disgusting.

So aside from mismatched parts ( which honestly i could care less about) it's a functioning gun. I've just heard that the mismatched versions jam like crazy etc.
But if all is well for the most part I'd like to jump on one.

Do it. At least the pressure of being a "purist" is off. If your mongrel goes bang repeatedly with each trigger pull and you get 3-4 MOA with it, you're in the club a few hundred cheaper.

Well over 1500 rounds through my ATI sks, not a single issue. Not a jam, not a fte, nothing. And that's using old ruski surplus ammo.

I personally like my Ati stock I did modify it so the grip bolted through the stock and wasn’t just wood screwed into plastic tho

From my understanding, the issue with them is that they are SKSs with bad stocks that they replace with these.
That usually means that if the stock was in bad enough shape to warrant needing replaced, then it stands to reason that the rifle itself is probably in bad shape when compared to a non ATI stocked rifle. Probably due to poor storage.
I wouldn’t think that’s always the case though. I have a GRAS 1874 MLE where the stock has a bunch of very obvious worm damage, but the gun itself is actually in pretty nice shape.
My TLDR; stocks get replaced because the wooden one is rough. That means the rifle itself is probably also rougher than a nice wood stocked one, but not always 100% the case.

It does everything you could need. Pistol grip, Fold, mount foregrip, bipod or light. Pair that with a an ar mag adapter and top rail and its a very capable modern sporter. It works so well they only thing I can say is after many years I'm just bored with the look of it.

Or, if you want more permanent, if you have a lighter stock, they would take Rit dye well.

Thought of that but just can't commit to a scheme. Also really thought of one of these newer solid metal chassis but just too much money to me.

Mine was a mostly matching Chinese with a Russian mag. Everything works fine and it looked to be unfired when I got it. The ATI stock that was on it had tons of burs in the plastics but I just filed them down. The grip could use a longer screw but that's my only real complaint. For the cost discount id say go for it! You can always buy a replacement stock for it down the line. It'll never be matching but it'll work just the same.
Also, mine was from g4c if that makes any difference

The cosmoline was also mostly cleaned out of mine when I got it too...saved me a huge amount of time cleaning. It still had some in the nooks and crannies but the bolt was clean and the gas tube was clean. A couple of patches down the barrel and she was minty. Didn't come with a bayonet but I'm using the lug for a bipod anyways

They're bad because they're usually a mishmash of non-matching SKS parts put into a shitty ATI stock
I know, because I bought one. The gas tube and magazine were non-matching and were sorta stiff when reassembling the rifle.
In my opinion, buy a regular milsurp French Tickler and then buy an aftermarket stock to replace the wooden one afterwards if you want to

My sks is in an ATI stock and I kinda like it. I'm no purist, but I've got and actually refurbished the wood, but the ATI remains. My point? You do you!

I dont reccomend, the surplus sks with destroyed stocks are usually put into these configurations. Some are okay others horrible. Tolerances are out to lunch.

I like mine. It's not a cream of the crop example of an SKS, but I mean, they're cheaply made garbage rods. So its not much worse than one either. Saved a couple hundred buying it, and saved hundreds more not going down the rabbit hole of trying to "bubba it tastefully". Goes bang. Looks cool. No issues.

Hot take: fuck it, we ball. I’ve heard the woes of “parts bin gun” and “cheap plastic stock” but for $200 less than an all original commie boomstick, it’s an sks that will go bang.
