Misc First time ordering a gun question

Hey all. Looking to order the makasi mk15 when it finally arrives. What are the process of ordering a firearm online? I have always purchased my guns in person, or at gunshows. This’ll be my first time ordering

Gotenda seems to want a follow up email with drivers’ license and PAL photos referencing your order number. I don’t know if that’s the exception or the rule, I’ve only ordered firearms online from them.

It seems to be standard now amongst most businesses I order from (even some gunpost sellers want the license and all too)

What happens after arrival? Is it like ordering ammunition? Just sign a signature?

In theory yes but from personal experience guns and ammo just get dumped at the doorstep and you bring them in when you come back from work. Hope you don't live in a place infested with porch pirates.

Interesting. Last time i had purchased ammo online was 7.62x54r from firearms outlet and i needed to sign a signature

All comes down to the deliver person really, I usually have to sign for rifles and pick it up. But have had Canada post leave them at my front door

Tbh I’d rather just go pick it up at the post office (which is pretty much across the street for me anyway) than risk an awkward interaction with the RCMP on whether or not the porch pirates are out that day. I like the idea of mail order convenience, not so much the possibility that my $800+ firearm is just as liable to be stolen off my front porch as the sandwich bags I ordered off of Amazon.

Most sites you just create an account and once it's all filled out you can just purchase freely.

I have purchased several firearms from online stores. I have five suggestions :

  1. Get your porch pirate risk down to zero. If you can't guarantee someone home to greet the delivery driver, then proactively arrange to deliver to the nearby office or UPS store. ​

  2. When you open the package, have microfiber rags ready. Expect your firearm to be greasy with cosmoline or other packing oil. Wipe it down cleanly so you can do suggestion 3 below...

3 Diligently photograph the firearm and all box contents as soon as you open it. You will need those photos to dispute any missing parts or broken items.

  1. Perform a disassembly to clean and inspect everything closely. Have more rags ready. ​If you find anything amiss or if there are sharp burr edges anywhere, photograph it​. ​​

  2. Reassemble with a gentle lubing, then go shoot the gun asap. You will want to report any malfunctioning or QA issues within the first seven days.

Hi. Thank you for the response. This’ll be my first “modern” rifle since i mostly have milsurp. The rifle in question will be the mk15. I live in a pretty safe neighborhood, i would disclose my location but i don’t feel a need to, family is safe enough to have families outside etc. just a small street, secondly, how should i inspect for cosmoline? Should i use plastic gloves as well and with what you said rags? And should a flashlight be used? Thank you

I personally bare-hand it when cleaning cosmoline. I find that and CLP oil to be easy to wash off with hand soap.

Flashlight can help to identify any indicators of previous use (e.g. Crud buildup inside the barrel, wear marks on the trigger group internals, dirt inside the locking lug cavities)

What I like to do is to also use my bare finger to feel for smoothness on the chamber wall, receiver wall edges, locking lug edges, feed port edges, and ​any exposed edges. In a perfect Quality Control world, every single gun would be hand-nspected and hand-polished at the factory. In our world, maybe 1 in every 20 guns get that kind of attention, leaving the gun owner with the job of inspecting and polishing.

Truth be told, I expect any new firearm under $2500cad to need​​​ some sand paper or emery paper polishing. If it is perfectly deburred and pre-polished, then be happy you got the 1 in 20!
