Buy recommendations OverUnder question
Hey fellow gun owners,
I’m looking for my first shotgun and I’m leaning towards an over-under. I’ll be using it for clay bashing.
Since I’m left-handed, I’ve found that over-unders are a great start for me, rather than semi-autos.
I don’t hunt, so this will be purely for clay shooting, target practice at the range, and other activities.
I’d love to know your recommendations for my first over-under. Ideally, I’m looking to spend between $1,000 and $1,500, either used or new.
I went to my closest Ramakko’s and saw a used Browning Citori with a 30-inch barrel. It’s in pretty good condition and they’re selling it for around $1,500 CAD plus taxes.
What do you think? Is that a good price? Also, when can I find private ads so I can compare different options?
Since this is my first gun, I don’t want to go over budget. Maybe I’ll stick with semi-autos or a different gauge in the future, but I’d love to hear your thoughts.

A citori is a good O/U. The Browing Citori or the Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon are both the standard entry level O/Us, but can be pricey.
This said, I wouldn't entirely sleep on semis either. I'm a lefty and my Beretta A300 Ultima 28" supports lefties just fine. The safety and stock shims are reversable. The ejection port and other controls aren't a real issue.

I use a Browning Citori CX, love that gun! For $1500, it's a steal. I paid like $3k for mine a couple of years ago (with an adjustable comb).
For that price, I'd take it and run.

Get the Miroku, but make sure you read the description and I’d say IC and Mod are great for fixed chokes for hunting/sporting clays, otherwise cylinder for skeet, mod/full for trap.

TriStar Setter is $750
I have the upland hunter which was $600 and has since been discontinued, but its been real good to me the last 5 years, and is a beautiful gun.

On tenda they have a deal for a reximex 912 over under with ejectors for 650$ before tax with 250 shells. If I was going to buy an over under thats what it would be for a starter yes its Turkish but still decent from the youtube review

I’m pretty sure you can get a decent used one on local gun post. Try Sudbury and North Bay. 800 bucks can get you a very decent one

I checked few local gun shops in sudbury > they don’t have any good o/u
But have’t tried North Bay yet

North Bay surprisingly has a good size firearm market. Check out gunpost. It’s literally the best place to buy up here. Ramakko sells many great guns, not very budget friendly tho. You can also check out the Canadian tires. Sometimes, they have sale on firearms too.

Over unders are actually usually right handed. Shotgun stocks typically have cast, which mean the stock bends to one side to put the barrel more inline with your eye when you mount the gun. Every Turkish made and European made O/U I’ve looked at has been cast for a right handed shooter. Browning O/U shotguns are typically neutral though.

My thoughts for you? Go to some place like Intersurplus, and buy a "Surplus" over under!
You are just getting into this all, so why not dip your toes?
Russian Baikal over unders go for $300-400 bucks. They aren't fancy, but they are durable.
Or on the pricier side, they have old Winchestor and miroku over unders for around 600-800!
Or somewhere in between, they have old CZ, BRNO, Husqvarna, Franchi, Valmet, and more from $400-600.
I don't know for sure which brands are better than others, and they are all used European guns so you also gotta loom at their condition. But it would be an excellent way to take a little step into the sport! Not too expensive, and you'll have a great piece of history, and likely keep it for years after, even if you buy a new, more expensive gun. Plus it's good to have a "Beater" gun so you can take your friends out to the range and not have to lend them your nice gun.
So thats my suggestion, buy a nice Surplus over under and enjoy. Shoot it till it breaks or till you decide you want something more.
As for me, I picked up an old Husqvarna double barrel that I'm going to shoot for a long time. I'm not so good at skeet, so I doubt I'll ever graduate to needing a fancier shotgun for it.
Edit, apparently Miroku actually manufacture Browning's Citori model, so an old used Miroku would be pretty cool, like a much cheaper used Citori, but the same great quality.
