Application / Regulation advice Long Range Shooting Options Ontario
I've been really wanting to get into long range precision shooting recently but have only been able to find a few ways to shoot over 600 meters. Either at CFB Borden up to 1k yards or MilCun up to 600m both through the Ontario Rifle Association.
I'm wondering if it might be possible to drive down to Michigan or New York or other nearby states and utilize their ranges, does anyone have experience doing this? I'm quite new to shooting and not sure what the laws are like in terms of taking firearms to and from the states.
Also, I've seen some people saying to use crown land but I don't think I'd feel comfortable shooting off range.
Would love to hear any ideas anyone has for long range shooting options in or near Ontario, I'm completely fine with driving 3+ hours.

Any reason you don’t want to join the ontario rifle association? Shooting 1k yards at Borden is great and milcun is also fine

Not saying I don’t want to join the ORA, I likely will. I am just curious if anyone knows of a range in Ontario or neighbouring provinces or states that offer shooting past 1000 yards.

Ah gotcha. For what it’s worth the ORA is great and I highly recommend it. As for shooting farther, there’s nothing farther than Borden and Milcun 1000 yard ranges

Good to hear on the ORA, very high likelihood I’ll join in the near future. Disappointed that Ontario is so limited however.

I’m new to shooting. Does ORA gain you access to the range at Borden? Is there a waitlist? I’m in innisfil, and like everyone else it’s hard to find somewhere to practice safe shooting.

Joining the ORA lets you attend more than 2 ORA hosted events per calendar year. Check out their website for the various events they host. You can only use the ranges at Borden during an ORA event and there is no wait list to my knowledge

I got the same issue in Ontario. The longest shooting range near Toronto is Sharon. They have one with 300yard

Yea, I find it really surprising that Ontario doesn’t have more options. I’ve even tried looking further north past North Bay and still very limited.

I’d love to one day make it out to Alberta or BC to shoot but I’m trying to find something that I could drive to for a weekend (even if it takes +4h each way).
I haven’t looked into ranges in the U.S. yet, I wanted to ask and see if anyone else had the idea of driving down from Ontario to nearby states to shoot long range. I’m just assuming Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or New York will have at least one range that shoots past 1000 yards.
I appreciate you sharing information about going to the U.S. with a rifle, I’ll look into it more to see if my idea is even remotely feasible.

I’m in Ontario and when I did a mapleseed one of the instructors talked about regularly shooting PRS matches in the US. There’s a form you need to fill out for the ATF and if everything is approved it’s good for like a year or something, no need to do it every time. I believe there’s also something you can do before you leave with the CBSA so that it’s easier coming back.
It’s difficult to find anywhere to shoot long range on crown land in Ontario. The places I’ve been while hunting and scouting, you’d be lucky to find a spot to target shoot at 200m never mind 400+

You need to drive further north or north east to find the appropriate crownland to shoot over 1k or 1.5k.
Way more effort driving frequently to US to shoot long range.

Long range shooting is hard to access and can be quite expensive. I’ve heard that you can shoot .22 to 100-200 m and simulate a long range shot. Definitely not the same thing, but much more accessible and not as expensive. I’ve also heard it’s better to use subsonic ammo when doing this.
