Fix my gun Marlin 89C

Hey people, I have a marlin 89C .22 inherited from a passed away relative that I really would like to keep.

I’m just wondering since I know nothing about gunsmithing and repair, it doesn’t eject spend casings. Would it even be worth taking to a gunsmith?

Given it sounds like you have sentimental value of it, absolutely I’d have it looked at if you can’t figure it out by tearing it down yourself. I’d check your extractor first though.

I haven’t even attempted to tear it down I’ll be honest. It’s been sitting for over 15 years now 😅

Give it a good cleaning too, if the extractor looks okay the rifle may just need a very good cleaning. Maybe some rust or dried oil in the chamber. I'd try a deep cleaning, if extractor looks okay then just reassemble and try again, if still failing to extract then disassemble and replace extractor? Might be a bit hard to source the part so hence why I'd try cleaning first. Some gun parts that would be easy to find in the USA can be tough to get up here.

That'll be your first step, especially if there's a lot of gunk in there. .22s aren't exactly clean guns.

The extractor might honestly be broken or missing. Numrich has a picture of this part that you can use for reference- if the tooth that grabs the round is broken, or if this part is missing or damaged in some other way, you can order it from them without issue.

Note that semi-auto .22s don't necessarily need extractors to function (simple blowback guns like these operate using the cartridge's inherent tendency to blow back out of the chamber when fired, hence the name), so this may not even have been a problem that was ever noticed during live fire. It's a nuisance when it comes to unloading, though.
