Misc What are some cartridges you wish were more popular?

For me it’s .221 fireball and .416 rigby, I really enjoy shooting both but there isn’t much support for them and ammo is hard to come across. Curious what other rounds people wish were more popular?

honestly, the humble 22wmr so that the price per unit would go down a bit. Its a shame that right now it's priced about the same as 9mm Luger

.22 wmr is my favourite rimfire, I wish it was cheaper too

It's a great round.

I feel if this wasn’t metric it would be the most popular moose round in NA.

I have never hunted with one, but have had the chance to shoot a rifle chambered for it.

My Dad's hunting buddies always swore by the 9.3x62 and 9.3x57... they said it downed game like nothing else. I'd love to try taking a deer with one.

One of my favourite cartridges. I find it easy to handload too.

.410

Why is it so expensive??

I can blow through several boxes of 12ga target for the same price as a box of .410.

I think it's even less of an ammo supply issue on something like the .416 and more of affordable gun options. If I could buy a .416 sub 2k, that would be amazing. I know the Zastava line didn't do so great, but you could buy a safari model for sub 1k at one point.

.303

303 has become increasing hard to find in my area

6.8 western. It’s pretty new but I hope it takes off. The perfect mix of range, energy and recoil.

If we had suppressors, alot of us homesteaders and ranchers would get alot of use out of sub sonic variants. Would love a 9x39 VSS since it is restricted status in Canada. But of course the rifle is integrally suppressed, so it's a no go here...

.22 Hornet.

It is extremely satisfying to shoot.

I can’t imagine the cost of 416 rigby my 300 win mag is already too costly I think I’ve only put like 20 rounds through mine lol 338 Lapua Is also nuts but super fun to shoot

.280 Ross. I just wish some would make factory ammo for it. Even finding the correct diameter bullets to reload is a pain.

7mm mauser. It goes under-appreciated in North America.

I’d love to see 6.5 creedmore cost the same as 308 one day

u/SpectreBallistics Spectre Ballistics International (Verified) Jun 10 '26

That day is today.

2

u/blueline731 Jun 10 '26

Really? I still see it for $3 a shot near me, and can never find it in bulk. On a good day I’ll get my 308 for $1 a round.

5

u/prosper_0 Jun 10 '26

so what you want is the availability of crappy 6.5CM ammo? Because you won't find good 308 for $1/ea either

1

u/blueline731 Jun 10 '26

Yeah I buy good stuff when I’m taking it out far, but if I’m just plinking I don’t need anything special.

6.5x55 seems to be getting some of the attention it deserves recently. Hoping that continues.

25-20

2

u/16gaugeguy16 Jun 11 '26

I have always thought this would be a fun cartridge to use. A neat old era varmint cartridge in a lever gun

2

u/5hane7rain Jun 11 '26

I've managed to resurrect an old Marlin 94 and am really enjoying shooting it.

17 WSM, the undisputed champion of rimfire.

u/Q-Ball7 In the end, it's taxes all the way down Jun 10 '26

It's irritating that there are no short barrel/high capacity options for 17 WSM.

For the 20-25 grain loadings, .17 WSM performs identically from a 12" barrel to 4.6x30mm out of a 7" barrel. (Same thing with the Savage A17 in this caliber as compared to that 13" 4.6x30 Anschutz rifle, for that matter.)

It's very similar to the round used by the Interdynamics MKR of the 1980s, and it's strange nobody seems to notice.

1

u/Acc4Wtf Jun 10 '26

My only experience with it is the bolt action Winchester Xpert w/ 16.5" barrel. I think you're not seeing shorter barrels because of the velocity drop, but I agree it'd be wicked to have a semi-auto high capacity rifle! They have this in the US, check out the Franklin Armory F17L 🤤🤤

I think you're not seeing shorter barrels because of the velocity drop

Not really. People say this about ARs too because muh fragmentation, but ignore that in the places a short barrel is the correct choice that's a non-issue.

You're still getting something on the order of 2400-2600 FPS out of a 12" barrel (you need a tool like GRT to get this data), which is still faster than 17 HMR ever gets, and far better than that round would achieve from a barrel of the same length. No problem out of a short rifle that's not really intended past 100 yards.

1

u/Acc4Wtf Jun 10 '26

I'm all for it and I get what you're saying, it's true. Problem is no manufacturer is willing to take the risk and make it. It's this self defeating prophecy, or chicken-and-the-egg type of problem. Few firearms, scarce ammo availability, low interest. Put those 3 reasons in any order and it works (to it's own detriment).

u/gamercast1337 Jun 10 '26

10mm. I cant get a pistol with it now, and I dont think any other gun exists in canada that can shoot it currently 😭 I need my fallout cartridge, my round to show im not a limp-armed pussy 🥺

1

u/KingHarber Jun 11 '26

There are some lever actions chambered in 10mm

4.73 × 33 mm caseless. I got to fire a G11 once and I'd love to have one of the rounds to put on a shelf. It was one of the weirdest guns I've ever fired.
