No, only detriment.

There are people who claim that that it's best to have it farther up.

Those people are cargo-culting what they see SF guys do. Those guys put their C-Mores on gooseneck mounts on ARs because they had no other real option at the time. Forward-mounted scopes/"scout rifles" are like that too; there's only one place you can put a scope to not interfere with stripper clip loading on old milsurp rifles.

The largest window, and the largest apparent dot size that doesn't compromise your ability to hit targets at the longest distance you think you'll encounter for that rifle, is what you want. You can get away with mounting the gun less-than-perfectly when you have a dot that's easier to acquire, and more likely to actually show up in the window under those conditions. (Compare how, relative to a player directly in front of a goal, the goalie covers more of the net the closer he is to the player.)

And inb4 "muh situational awareness with a smaller optic": 99% of the improvement over irons is achieved simply by keeping both eyes open.
