Misc Flying with magazine and some empty clips?

Has anyone had any issues flying w basic firearm parts in their checked bags? I'm mostly worried I'll end up spending half an hour filling out forms and paying more than the magazine is worth to get it on the plane.

It's not a firearm, but check with the airline at the counter.

The declaration is very easy, it's like 5 check boxes and a signature.

Source: I am writing this from my flight where I checked a firearm.

Better get there extra early. From my experience the attendants and security are useless and won't understand.

I walked up and told them straight up that I had firearm magazines, no ammo, no firearms. Literally I think it would've been easier with an actual gun. They held me up for an hour trying to figure out if it was allowed, told me to fill out the firearm form which only related to ammo amounts and firearm serial numbers. After several phone calls and a manager coming out they finally scanned my bag at let me get in with my day.

I missed a flight once because I had a bolt carrier group in my carry on bag, which apparently warranted a discussion with Peel Regional Police. Air Canada insisted I check my bag as if it contained a firearm, everyone involved was a total dickhead, and it was a significant pain in the ass.

I should have just said it was an engine part, but barring that, plan air travel with any firearm parts as if you are travelling with an actual firearm to avoid such unpleasantness.

I travel by air with spent shells frequently. 5.56nato, 7.62Nato, even 25mm.🤷

No one actually knows what a clip is? Clips are often mistaken as magazine. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Yes, and he said he has both. A strip of plastic or metal ( a clip ) in itself is not recognizable to anyone not knowing what it is. Clips are not mistaken as magazines, magazines are often called clips though. Good try.

Declare it at the counter. If for any reason you have ammunition, make sure it's not loose and in a box and declare that too.
