Misc If I have an SKS reciever and barrel...

Hi r/canadaguns

If I had an SKS barrel and receiver, would I be able to purchase a stock and install the pieces into the stock? Are there any other factors that I would need to be aware of?

I haven't done something like this before, my apologies if this may seem like a ridiculous question.

Do you have the internals? That's going to be the more difficult part.

This is the truth, I have been on and off searching for a bolt and firing pin for an sks for years.

Doctor deals has them in stock. Website seems sketchy, and they only accept etransfer but I’ve bought from them twice no issues.

If you need to find all the parts besides a barreled receiver it will be way cheaper to buy a new SKS.

You only have a receiver and barrel? You'll also need the following, besides the stock:

  • Front sight sleeve and rear sight leaf (assuming they aren't on the barreled action)

  • Gas tube and upper handguard

  • Gas piston

  • Gas piston extension (sometimes called the oprod)

  • Gas piston return spring

  • Bolt

  • Bolt carrier

  • Recoil spring assembly

  • Dust cover

  • Magazine

  • Trigger group

  • Bayonet (optional)

Lord help me, thank you for the breakdown. All the SKSs for sale around me are around $1000 now so I thought I could possibly save money by spending time. 

I may have overestimated.

If it includes the functional part then I'd say it's still worth it, but otherwise you are better off with a whole gun.

I would assume so, assuming the reciever has the bolt assembly and gad system intact

Do you have all the other parts like the dust cover, bolt. recoil spring, gas piston, etc.? If magazine is missing, you can get a detachable mag.

There is a small metal recoil lug that comes with many stocks, if that is missing, you can skip it or fashion your own out of some metal. Some stocks will have a replacement one anyways.

This is basically what importers do with damaged SKSes, they put them into plastic ATI stocks.

Stock may require some minor filing and sanding to fit the receiver.

Thank you for such detail! Someone is selling a barrel and reciever near me, perhaps Ill ask them for specifics regarding the internals.
