Buy recommendations Mossberg shotgun
Hello there, got myself a 20ga mossberg 500 field, looking for a good recommendation on a top sight for the gun, little ball sight just isint enough for me, anyone got any good budget friendly options to reccomend?

I run a vortex red dot on mine - which i use to hunt grouse with.

I have a vortex green dot on my sxp havent done any hunting but I plan too I’ve shot skeet at the range with my dot and its amazing havent had anything rattle off fired about 500rds I believe from it optics held zero perfectly I’ve sent buck,slugs and birdshot no issues with zero

I use a sparc ii…. But i also have a vortex defender on my m4 and really like the unobstructed view it provides. If you have the cash and don’t mind spending as much on an optic as you did the shotty then that might be a nice option

If it's already tapped for optics, i'm a really big fan of the Vortex Viper Enclosed shotgun sight, especially now that they are offered in green.

XS Sight Big Dot is my recommendation. It''s what I run on my 590.

You're welcome! I know it's not a red dot, but it's a nice and lightweight solution that you can easily keep as backup later if you decide to upgrade to a red dot. That's my plan for my 590.

What is your use case? Hunting? If so what kind of hunting?
If for bird hunting, a sight is almost not needed as swinging on a bird is pointing not aiming.

Mix between hunting/target, it’s my first shotgun and I’m NOT a huge fan of the ball sight lol

You still need to be more specific though.
Hunting could be deer, it could be birding. Each of these have different needs. If you are hunting deer, you could very well put an optic on it. I don't so I won't be the one suggesting you what to put on it.
If you are hunting upland birds or waterfowl, again all you need is a fibre or the bead.
Target shooting with a shotgun could mean clay sports, it could be shooting at paper, it could mean dynamic shotgunning like with 3gun. For claysports, a red dot would be a hindrance IMO. Again a bead would still be best.
For shooting at paper, keep in mind 30y is generally the maximum effective range for shot. So you don't really need an optic for those ranges.
For dynamic shotgunning or for tactical needs, then a red dot is something that could be of benefit as you are quickly snapping on target. I have a red dot on my tactical shotgun and I have considered doing the same for my dynamic sport shotgun (but don't have any rails on that one).

You looking for an actual optic or something for bird hunting? I have the snap on fibre optic front and rear sights to replace the bead on my 870 and love em
