News / Politics / Activism Ford government joins Supreme Court challenge of 'assault-style' firearms ban
I know this is paywalled, but the headline says enough. The article is thin on details. It states that the Ontario government filed an “intervention notice” with the Supreme Court on May 19 in the CCFR’s challenge of the ASF bans. Can anyone explain what this means and if it actually means that Ford is backing the CCFR like it sounds? I’m not a fan of the Star but couldn’t find anything else about this.
From the article:
“The office of Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey confirmed the Ontario government filed an intervention notice on May 19 but said "we have no further comment."”

An intervention notice means Ontario is asking the Supreme Court for permission to participate in the case as a third party, not that it has become the main plaintiff or that it formally joined the CCFR’s side in every respect. In Supreme Court practice, an intervener usually tries to add a distinct legal perspective the court may find useful, rather than taking over the case or guaranteeing agreement with the party it supports.
So no, it does not automatically mean Ford is “backing the CCFR” in the political sense. It more precisely means the Ontario government wants a seat at the table to make arguments in the constitutional case, and the specific position it takes can range from supporting the challenge, supporting the federal law, or taking a narrower middle position on legal issues.
But boy do I wish he would just sack up and join us/the CCFR

Are there any other provincial governments "joining in"? The more the merrier.

Although I'm almost 100% sure Alberta gov and MP have spoken out against the disarming of the people by the Lib gov, there hasn't been any official Political party aligning with the CCFR common sense movement. PP also has spoken about it but I haven't seen anyone lift a finger yet.

I thought the alberta and sask governments were part of the ccfr side in this court case?

Oh yeah absolutely. They wrote letters if I'm not mistaken about how they align with the CCFR's stance on gun control however although they openly and publicly rebuke the disarming, they're mostly "no cooperation" when facing the lib grab.I personally fw how they refused to put funding into the grab. But I don't think any have "joined" the movement exactly. I see it more as being cheered on but not actually reinforced... could be wrong Whereas the CCFR are actively fight back and defending our rights, promoting and organizing an entire campaign around the mouvement.

OTTAWA—The Ontario government has joined the legal challenge by a firearms lobby group of the federal government’s sweeping 2020 ban on “assault-style” weapons.
The Ford government is joining the Supreme Court challenge as the Carney government begins collecting weapons for its contentious buyback program, after the owners of roughly 67,000 now-banned guns, nearly half in Ontario, signed up to turn them in for compensation rather than risk criminal charges.
That's the whole thing. Small article. Also, Canada's criminal code defines weapon as any object used with the intent to harm a person since my guns are for target practice only, they're sporting tools. Not weapons.

"used, designed, or intended to cause death or injury"
Have fun in court!

So technically anything include any and all parts of the human body. I'm sure somewhere their is a legal precedent of some sod being killed by grass clippings.

Since a lawnmower can launch a projectile, is that considered a firearm? 🤔

Many banned firearms are designed for sports shooting and used as such with intent to punch holes in cardboard.
I can do mental gymnastics too.

u/looloopklopm May 26 '26
Too bad the code also explicitly states that firearms are weapons! Dang Gubment
2
u/milanskiv May 26 '26
That’s a different argument from the one you made above. Also, “are guns weapons?” Is not what the Supreme Court will be deciding on.

u/looloopklopm May 26 '26
I'm not making an argument. I'm correcting somebody who thinks that "any object used with the intent to harm a person" is a weapon. It's more complicated than that.

This is one of the stupidest arguments gun owners have. Trying to argue that guns aren't weapons instead of just sacking up and saying yes they are but with proper care and handling they can be used safely.
It reeks of weirdo sovereign citizen "I'm not driving, I'm traveling" bullshit and does nothing to help our perception with non gun owners. In my opinion.

It's as if we're getting vetted in the first place so we WONT use them as weapons against others oh wait we are

Hate ford, but at least this will likely aid in some small part to this specific cause which is huge for gun owners. Would love to see other provinces contributing in other ways as well

While an intervention doesn't necessarily mean supporting the challenge, this is promising after Ford's "protect your firearms" statement at the end of his speech the other day.

Fingers crossed but I ain't getting my hopes up. Can you imagine if it all gets shot down and they flush the OICs? No more bans, no more worries?! We'd be free to buy whatever we want without worrying about whether or not it's ban bait.
Since my license came in like a month after the December 25 ban, I've never felt that freedom. Every purchase I make always comes with a side of worrying about the next OIC..
I can't even imagine what it would be like to just shop for a firearm that I want, based solely on how well it will fit my needs, and not whether or not it could become prohibited in a few months..
🙏🏻 I want a PCC!

Even if the Supreme Court squashes the OIC we still gotta wait and see what the liberal fucks will do. They have a majority now, they could easily just ban everything in parliament

u/eldaniay May 26 '26
personally i think the "best" case scenario is just cancel the theft, which means that they will just be unusable forever, kinda like machine guns but you cant pass them along
2
u/boozefiend3000 May 26 '26
That’s definitely the best case with the liberals. Hopefully that plays out and the cons reverse that shit whenever they’re back in power
5
u/canada1913 May 26 '26
Even if that happened, which it won’t, there’s always the next thing around the corner. Ive been a gun owner and hunter for 19 years now and it’s always “just around the corner” that the libs are trying to do something crafty and full of bullshit to punish us.
1
u/Response-Cheap May 26 '26
Yeah. I know. I don't have my hopes up. That's why I said imagine if.. It'll never happen. At least not for many years until someone with common sense takes over, and exposes how faulty the current governments logic is to the public..
6
u/Upstairs-Zebra8115 May 26 '26
Keep in mind that now that the libs have a majority they don't need to use OICs to ban guns now. I'm not saying they want to fall on that grenade at this point but then, who knows?

If only there was a federal candidate he could have supported that had this change in their platform. If only. I’d be willing to bet Doug wants to run for pm. And after helping prop up more liberal bs - I won’t vote for him again.

Good but I still wouldn't piss on Ford if he was on fire

My local provincial candidate won, and I've had some good conversations with them about the program
Sadly the federal one was split between a conservative and Julie D who I've dealt with more times than I'd care to, she's lockstep with the program and whatever comes down the chain sadly.
