Misc Torturous Tuesday

It’s wild to think that two years ago around this time I finished building a 22LR upper for my Raven.

‘Only’ managed to get around 3,000rds through it before it was deemed to “assault rifley” for use.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find it a little bit like torture having this thing locked away never to be used again for god knows how long.

It's a damn shame! I know your pain. Nothing beats the combined fun and training value of a 22LR upper.

Let's hear some details about your build! What parts did you decide on, what tinkering was required, accuracy results, etc?

I’m game to make a more detailed post later today when I’m off work.

I do have a previous post where you can see more of the inner bits.

Right on, looks like I upvoted that one as well haha. Nice innovation on converting the cmmg kit to work. I'm sure there was a fair bit of fine tuning involved. I'm curious what barrel you decided on and the accuracy it delivered. I never bothered with a 22 barrel but always wondered what the improvement in groups might have looked like.

I end up going with a Bore Buddy Apogee barrel. With the 16” barrel it gives the appearance of a 14.5” because 1.5” sits inside the receiver to meet up with the collar needed for the CMMG kit.

The reason I went with a dedicated 22 barrel was purely because I wanted a “cool guy” rifle and that was the only way to legally get a shorter barrel without wandering into restricted territory. Since I’m not able to chamber center fire ammunition, I could go below 18.5” but I seek needed to maintain the 26” OAL. Going from the rear of the buffer tube to the crown of the barrel the rifle is 28”.

When it comes to accuracy, I honestly want to concerned with it when I started the build, I figured if I could get an inch at 50 meters I’d be pretty happy. I want to say the best group with some Winchester white box stuff gave me just shy of an inch. Out to 100 meters I was able to easily keep shots within a 3” circle as long as I was actually trying. I didn’t bother trying other loads since my other 22s are pretty happy running the white box stuff too.

That said, if the chance ever comes up and I can run the rifle again I’ll absolutely try some CCI and Aguila.
