Application / Regulation advice PAL IN 30days

Hello everyone, and happy long weekend.
I wanted to share my timeline for the non-restricted and restricted PAL.
I applied online on April 4, 2026. My reference checks were completed the next day. By May 4, 2026, my licence was approved and shipped.
I received my PAL in my mailbox last Tuesday.

Great choice, you can still find the field/security barrel combo some places

I think of just getting a 28 barrel 12g from Bass Pro. It’s
$100 discount and selling for $299.98 for now. I can use it to learn and later teach my wife. After a month, I want to buy a nice over and under only, and only exclusively for me lol.

88's are great all-rounders but if its skeet you want get yourself a good over/under. Pumps work but you get better followup not having to cycle the action and potentially lose your sweet spot.

An M88, a T3x, a TM22 or 10/22 and an SKS and you've got the 4 pillars of Canadian firearms...until you want more.

Mine took 6 months but I had to explain the details of my divorce and that I was on anti depressants for a period of time following the end of my marriage. The CFO asked what I thought my ex would think of me owning firearms. I told him "I'm really not sure, I think you'd get a different answer depending on her mood on any given day."

He said he wasn't going to bother contacting her, because it would likely be a waste of time for everyone involved. Pal showed up next week.

Nice, to many of us facing similar challenges. I know for sure your comment will help others.

Pretty much the same timeline for my wife and I. Submitted everything in mid March, cards in hand at the end of April.

u/kwc_king May 17 '26

Congrats, I thought I am going to miss this year by seeing other members application getting 1-1.5yr of waiting timeline.

2

u/SocksOfDeath May 17 '26

Same, I was also worried. I'm wondering if a lot of the people with these massive wait times aren't telling us about past criminal history or issues with mental health.

First time PAL applicants are processed much faster because it's done online now. If you had your PAL already, renewing it can and will take muuuuch longer (snail mail, physical documents). Not sure if (all?) renewals are being done online now.

I've always been upfront about my year long wait time being likely due to my previous mental health issues, even though my doc had cleared me to fly aircraft years ago and that went well.

Possibly too much fake domestic abuse charges rn making men life more difficult.

What province are you in? If you don't mind me asking. I submitted mine mid March of this year and its still with the CFO office for MB from when I called last week.

Congrats! Glad to see others are getting their's quick even if I seem to need to wait a bit.

My partner and I applied on the same day. She got hers within 6 weeks and it's now months later and I'm still waiting. You are very lucky!

u/kwc_king May 18 '26

Wow thats why I shared my timeline, it’s very unpredictable. Did you applied online?
Thank you 🙏🏼

2

u/skepdic52 May 18 '26

We did apply online! Both her references completed the process while mine expired and had to redo them, so maybe that's why it's late

2

u/Memorywipe May 19 '26

Do the references for online all happen through email or do they have to call in?

2

u/kwc_king May 20 '26

Everything Online, if application applied online

1

u/kwc_king May 18 '26

Similar timeline for me a couple years ago except I mailed the forms and everything in before remembrance day weekend, got the PAL in the mail day before New Year’s Eve

2

u/kwc_king May 18 '26

Amazing

2

u/SSjGuitarist May 19 '26

Yeah. I was surprised. And by the next day I was driving 2.5 hrs away to buy my first gun, tm22 feather off a guy I found on gunpost the day before lol. I definitely overpaid looking back, but the feathers weren’t being sold anywhere in Canada at the time, so I really didn’t care. I just wanted it haha

1

u/kwc_king May 19 '26

I can see gunpost seller selling same as shops but used, Its better to pay HST and buy new gun. I cant find a good deal

1

u/SSjGuitarist May 20 '26

If you want to believe the guy at his word, and I realistically have no reason not to, he bought the gun in Manitoba before he moved to GTA and then found out a range membership here would cost more than the rifle so he decided it wasn’t worth it. At the time of purchase, it had the box, the chamber flag, the manual, the tools for disassembly, the mags, and two 100 round boxes of CCI mini mags. For 500. The only other Tm22s on the market I could find were the 1st gen aluminum receiver ones with that awful stick non adjustable stock for the same price. It was so cool looking I didn’t even hesitate to give him what he was asking for. If it had ever been fired he did an amazing job of cleaning any evidence of it, and I never regretted the purchase for a second. Sure I was a little annoyed when my LGS got some feathers in two years later and they were selling for 399, but meh lol. I had already had tons of fun with mine by that point lol. Though these days I don’t think there is such a thing as deal on gunpost lol. If there is it’s gone in less than an hour lol

Fast ! I live in Quebec , where everything finding a doctor to closing out a corporation is slow by default. Applied for PAL june 2025 , got it end of April 2026. I emailed my local MLA at the 7 month mark , it’s possible that helped, IDK.
