Aquiring an exemption in Ontario.

Hi everyone, recently there have been multiple posts on how to obtain an handgun exemption and those that have aquired new firearms under those exemptions. The majority of those posts have been from BC or AB. I would like anyones experience in doing this in Ontario, it would be extremely helpful.

I don’t believe EESA is in OIHL, so they don’t have an SFC sanctioned match. You can use your shooting their as practice entries, but afaik, you need 1 SFC sanctioned match to qualify for the exemption.

You can visit oihl’s website and see all the clubs competing in it. You can also bring it up to EESA to join the OIHL, I don’t think OIHL would say no. The season has ended though, I think we restart in September

Ooooh good info thanks! Maybe we should start asking them to get set up with OIHL. How are we meant to do a match without a handgun? In my brief reading I saw a place up in Ottawa that lets you use an airgun. I'll try to look for it again

I compete a Burlington; in the beginning I just used club guns. You can also ask other people at your club if you can borrow one for a competition.

It’s a crime? I just read many comments on Reddit where people are saying that’s what you can do and you have to notify the rcmp if you change the caliber.

You must go through SFC. I had lucky timing due to when the matches were running, from start to getting a letter about 2 months. I got a Ruger mk4, and a GSP 500 is coming in soon whenever the CFO is done with the import stuff. I’m looking into getting a Ruger revolver, but can’t be sure if the CFO will approve.

For exemptions, SFC current gives out exemptions for 22LR and .177 (air rifle / pistols). You can shoot 32ACP centre fire by converting 22LR firearms to 32ACP (for ones that support it).

Step 1: Join a club that runs bullseye and get practices in. Ideally a club that has club guns you can use; if not, you’ll have to ask around for someone to lend you a pistol.

Step 2: register with SFC, and then compete in at least 1 SFC sanctioned match. This includes any OIHL club during the OIHL season, the two competitions held at Burlington by Ontario Pistol, or the provincial in Sharon. There’s other ones too, I just don’t know them. You’ll have to use a club gun or borrow a gun for this too.

Step 3: find a gun in 22 or 177 you want to buy, and negotiate the price. Once it’s agreed upon, move on to step 4.

Step 4: compile your practice scores, compile your competition score(s), and email SFC for the link to the exemption letter form. Fill it out with your scores, etc. You also have to fill in the pistol you want to buy here - be aware that you can only have 3 exemptions active at a time. (Once you ask for a 4th one, your first one expires; you can still own it, but you can’t acquire a new one of that anymore unless you apply for a new exemption).

Step 5: wait for them to send you the exemption letter, send it to the seller. The seller will initiate a transfer and submit your exemption letter.

Step 6: once CFO approves, you can pick up the pistol and the transfer is complete.

Nope! In Ontario, ATT is automatically issued with the transfer for your home and any legal range in Ontario. If you want to bring it to a gun smith or out of province, you need a separate ATT.

I know this is an old post but I have a question. Will they issue you an exemption for any model of 22lr handgun or does it need to be a specific model?

Unless it’s needed for work, you’re looking at an Olympic exemption. SFC mentioned that even air pistol matches and practice can help strengthen your case for getting the letter from them. Primarily it’s about building a brief record of competition participation and coach sign off.

You’d need to be a member of a range / gun club where they practice Olympic disciplines, find a coach who’s willing to help you, and do just a bit of a practice and competing. I haven’t done it yet but this was what the SFC has told me directly. I’d imagine the most expensive part is joining a club.

I’m planning to go with a club that has a loaner program (they dont allow you to bring your own firearms until you qualify) but the first year of fees (annual member fee + initiation fee + member card fees + safety qual course fee) is like $1500+. After that it’s only like $600 annually. You’d probably be looking at 6 month - 1 years worth of time and effort before you’ve got an exemption in hand and you’re purchasing your own handgun. Though I could be off a bit.

I talked to a guy at my local range and they said you can go through Olympic shooting. But depending on range you may need to find someone willing to lend you one for you to start first. Something I'm looking into.

You can only get a 22lr unfortunately.

The real question, can you get a 9mm that has been converted to 22 and import that and then once here you can order the stuff to convert back to 9mm. Is it worth it? No. But is it possible? I have no idea.

Yeah im not doxxing myself to prove it to you either. I was probably exaggerating a bit but it would prompt a real conversion within our business ( 1/3 is family, and pretty liberal ). Our company can work anywhere in western Canada. We have 2 road guys and the rest are in house manufacturing.

I would also agree that Alberta will not be leaving.
