Discussion: Canada’s handgun freeze policy and its impact on licensed owners

There’s been a lot of discussion lately around Canada’s handgun freeze and how it affects licensed owners.

I put together a short petition and info page asking for a formal review of the policy and its real-world impact, mainly focused on effectiveness and long-term outcomes.

It’s not meant as a political statement, more as a way to structure the discussion around whether the policy should be periodically reviewed.

No matter what we do they won’t do anything to bring anything they banned/froze back. Thats just the reality of things until or unless there is a government change.

Yup, I think the handgun freeze is actual law, unlike the OIC stuff. There's exactly zero chance they're going through the effort of passing laws to undo that.

I think it is still possible. There just needs to be a government in power, in a majority setting, that amends the law. I say majority because a statute must be amended in Parliament, unlike an OIC, which is amended via Cabinet.

Then you need the Senate to agree to those amendments as well.

None of this will happen with the current government.

Yep and the sooner people come to terms with that the sooner they can make peace with it. Doesn’t matter if we get 10 million petitions signed. Petitions don’t change the law.
