Gun and gear reviews Butler creek mags for 10/22 pinned wrong?

I bought two of the butler creek 10/22 mags and they appear to be pinned to ten but when I was loading them I put an 11th round in I tried it with both and the rounds go right passed the pin is this a common thing that happens with these mags I know over ten rounds is prohibited so what do I do
Just to clarify I did not de pin them or modify that mags in any way

I guess I should be concerned about the 25 round butler creek mags that I may or may not still have.

the upcoming supreme court decision has the potential to greatly impact non-judicial 'policy-based' decisions such as this one. In a nutshell - is it legal to create a law which 'loopholes' decisions like that to a 3rd party like the RCMP (or an OIC), thus bypassing the need to create actual laws.

In other words, can the govt make a law that says "<x> is illegal, where <x> gets to be defined (at any point, without oversight, due process, vote, etc) according the judgement of <some entitiy>"

yes they can, and do it all the time. For example the explosive regulations do it all the time, additionally for a non-firearm example: The lists of drugs allowed in the Country are made illegal or legal based on OiC's that declare what schedule they should be (legal or illegal)

The main point of the SCC court case isn't if OiC's or regulations are legal. (It is)

The question more likely before the SCC (which we don't know why they are taking up the case but likely is) is if the regulation itself has a limiting criteria that is also in the same sentence given the power to ignore its own limitations would that be a legal regulation? That being

In plain language, the above section basically reads: "The Minister of Public Safety cannot issue an OIC prohibiting anything that is, in their own opinion, something that is reasonable for Canadians to use for hunting or sporting purposes."

And while the obvious argument against such regulatory bans finds its fulcrum in the well-documented history of non-restricted and restricted rifles being used for hunting or sporting purposes in this country, unfortunately, equally obvious is that, according to the wording of the law, none of that matters if the Minister of Public Safety is of the opinion that the rifles in question aren't reasonable for hunting or sporting purposes.

This caveat seems to create a conflict within the law, as its wording seems to indicate that it seeks to limit the ability of the government to prohibit hunting and sporting firearms, but also provides limitless license to the government to opine on what the definition of "reasonable for Canadians to use for hunting or sporting purposes.” And in doing so, it effectively renders itself moot, as no Minister of Public Safety would issue an Order in Council prohibiting firearms and then admit holding the opinion that those same firearms are reasonable for hunting or sporting purposes.

Words matter in laws, and if the limitation was purposely inserted into the law. Is it legal to be able to just ignore it or make it moot.

This is why I stick to bird law

Except Gary did admit that on tape in this case

This is likely just an error by the rivet installer. However, this will be a benefit to you because that extra room in the mag will make it much easier to seat a fully loaded (10 round) mag on a closed bolt.

You absolute monster!

Jokes aside. The chances of you getting caught with an 11 vs 10 round 10/22 mag is small so you could do nothing. You could always try and re pin them yourself if you have the tools. Or contact whoever you got the from and try and get replacements.

I don’t think I’ve ever checked any new pinned mags to see if they’re actually pined to 10 vs 9 or 11. So good on you for doing the right thing

I’ve lodged a complaint against you with the RCMP. Consider your life of crime over, buster.

Mail these prohibited devices to me for destruction or rot in jail forever

Alot of mags are like that, I dont have a 10/22.

But with my TM22, I can squeeze an extra 2 in my 25 round mags, and an extra one in my 10 mags. SO basically 27 round and 11 round mags, Either way in the case of my TM22 still legal as there are no pistols that take the same mags so no capacity limit. That said, they shoot like crap and jam when over loaded.

Personally I wouldn't worry about 1 extra round in a mag, they probably have a little wiggle room for manufacturing tolerances, so as not to over compress springs and cause jamming.

Just load 10 in your mags, they will likely work better and even if someone wants to play the game of oops an extra round, well just plead ignorance and say well I bought 10 round mags and never noticed you can fit 11. I highly doubt most law enforcement would waste their time.

Now if it was a centerfire big scary black gun, well they might be more concerned, though if its a mag tolerance thing like the rimfire mags, you might be OK. I do know that my buddy has noticed this same thing with a couple of his AR mags, He said it seems like one in every 10 he's bought seem to fit an extra round, found out the first time at the range when someone called him on it. But he's also found they jam with an extra round too.

The legal answer is that you can't possess a magazine designed for the 10/22 that can hold more than 10 rounds of 22lr. Full stop

You need to either have the magazines hold no more than 10 rounds (by pinning or other permanent modifications) or surrender it to the police.

Unless you want to basically knowingly possess a potential prohibited device and be prepared for the consequences of what a court case would look like. Which many people might goad you to risk but unless you really know how, why and what basis you have a defense that it isn't a prohibited device. I strongly recommend you just don't risk legal problems.

Especially because unless you can properly explain why a 10/22 magazine isn't a pistol magazine, but the LAR-15 pistol magazine is a pistol magazine. Because a "win" for 10/22 rifle magazines will be a "loss" for LAR15 pistol magazines and people will hate you.

Hey if people don't want to hear the truth they are welcome to downvote. I mean people ask a legal question they get the correct legal answer, not a goad to knowingly break the law without understanding any context.

I welcome the people who truly think that 10/22 magazines should only be rifle magazines (and unlimited), explain how its different from a LAR15 pistol magazine.
