Milsurps / Prohib Finally got my hands on a Springfield M1 Garand Tipo 2 .308

Picked up this Springfield M1 Garand Tipo 2 recently and I’m honestly blown away by the condition and overall feel of this rifle. Always wanted a Garand and this one immediately felt right after looking at several.

From what I’ve been able to gather so far:
7.62 NATO configuration
Italian/FAT markings
original cocoon storage packaging
very clean bore and strong rifling
beautiful aged walnut stock
appears to have been preserved more than abused
Serial is in the 166xxx range.
Still learning more about the Tipo 2 history and markings.
Would love to hear from anyone else with a Tipo 2 or Italian-marked Garand. What serial range is yours in and how original is it?
Also curious would you guys preserve it as-is or shoot it regularly?

Does it say Springfield on it? Normally the Italian marked ones are Berettas and they were converted to the 7.62x51.

That's what mine is. Such a beautiful gun to shoot.

Had a question, does it still use the 30-06 en bloc clips in the .308 version, figure it would, just curious, and that's a sweet new rifle you got.

Yup, there’s a slight ramp added to the feed path to accommodate for the shorter rounds

Such a great rifle. I have always wanted one but they are way out of my budget unfortunately

Looks awesome! Look into getting some grease for if instead of standard oil, there are guides on where/how much to add but youd be amazed at how long it'll run without issues when she's properly greased

Personally I just Breakthrough Cleaning Technologies Grease but there are cheap automotive ones it likes and various others

I recommend picking up Bruce Canfield’s book on the Garand. It’s expensive, but really interesting and full of information. There’s some stuff about the Italian and Danish Garands.

Yeah seems to be the going rate for a decent condition one, guess they're only getting more expensive.
