Milsurps / Prohib Finally got my Kar98.
1941 Kar98. All matching except for the bolt (unique story, I know). The bolt looks like a G29/40 from 1940. Everything else appears to be original.
Kriegsmarine “N” on the butt plate so I’m assuming this is a beechwood with a (formerly) laminated finish.
I managed to get the gun, a case, about 40 rounds from the late 40’s/early 50’s, a box of 100 8mm bullets, 2 sets of reloading dies, and a similar year, but non-matching bayonet for 2 grand.
What’re your thoughts? Think I did okay? Either way I’m pumped as this gun completes my WWII bolt action hunt, and now my wallet can rest for a bit.

Looks like decent shape, so yeah that’s a decent price these days. Doesn’t get much cheaper tbh

Sweet gun. I think fair deal overall. Long as the bores good shape on it. Take the stock off and check for any metal corrosion and address it then shoot the hell out of it!

Yeah, I took it apart yesterday and everything was in really decent shape. Very little pitting in the bore that I could see.

Do it while they’re still in the realm of affordability!

Focusing on getting an m1 Garand first as I feel like those are at bigger risk

You mean you’re not focusing on getting one because that would totally be illegal and irresponsible and the risk isn’t worth it, right?
Edit: I’m stupid.

Oh fuck. I’m a dumbass. I thought these were on the 2020 list with the M14’s and M1 Carbines.. perhaps my wallet will suffer a little more punishment…

Great find. You must be very happy - finding a firearm you've been looking for a long time is one of the best feelings for a hobby shooter!

It’s been like 20 years. Every single one I’ve ever looked at before didn’t call to me. Something was always just off. This one everything felt right so I went for it. Feels so good.

Wow good deal! Bayonet alone worth around 200. But i dont see the KriegMarine proof stamp, where was it located?

u/bongblaster420 May 07 '26
Thanks! Bayonet is for sure not original, though I’m still verifying the age of it as it still has indications that it’s a war time knife.
In photo 7 on the butt plate you’ll see an “N” near the upper middle. That N stands for “Nordsee” which is North Sea. As the serials on the butt plate match the remainder of the gun it’s safe for me to assume the entire gun is a Kriegsmarine issue.

I could check your baionette if need help, bit to me it does not appear to be a KM k98k, kriegmarine acceptance stamp are usually an Adler with a M under it,or haken kreuz with M in other rare case.
