How does this affect new trappers? As far as I knew they were the only “civilians” allowed to carry a handgun on the trap line with a special permit.

Now they can’t own them at all?

If they get an ATC, they’ll get an exemption to acquire. Someone else posted here when they were looking for a 10mm, but those exemptions are calibre specific, whereas this is model specific. Ie, you should find the gun you want before applying for an exemption.
