This is why 3D printing is so interesting, it often comes down to the engineering and designing a part specifically for whatever its use-case is.

Exactly. Designing for 3D printing is very important. Simply duplicating or imitating an injection moulded or machined part is going to result in less than optimal results in most cases. How it's sliced for printing also makes a huge difference in the quality and strength of the part.
