Eby is really flailing out here.....
I dont think existing legislation is going to help much. The criminals already dont follow the laws, why would they follow the new ones?!

From what I read in the document, it seems to fill in some gaps in existing law, giving police more means to charge criminals for doing things that they normally would not have been able to.

giving police more means to charge criminals for doing things that they normally would not have been able to.
Is that a big issue though? I assume the bigger issue is getting charges to stick in court and to actually result in meaningful consequences. Charging more is good, but how about more convictions and jail time for repeat offenders.

u/some_guy2024 Apr 27 '26
That’s pretty much it, doesn’t matter if they get charged with more when they just let them walk on the charges anyways.

Where i live it is. Lots of low level criminals and kids getting into bad shit. There have been a few robberies with these guns. I don't think this solves the problem really except that if a cop catches a kid packing one I guess they can confiscate and lay a charge and if someone is selling them to youth they might be able to go after them a bit more or it will be a deterrent to make sure stores are doing more due diligence.
I think the real issue is socioeconomic, so this is just a weak band aid attempt to address one small issue in a much bigger problem.
Like most gun control it doesn't do much, its just a something that sounds good at a press conference or campaign trail. Then when these politicians are hammered by the press or opposition for not acting on crime it will be one of a few silly initiatives that they can regurgitate in a prerogative word salad.
Its much much harder, and less "sexy" to address the actual issues that are plaguing oir society, like economic conditions, so they will throw these things out in a desperate attempt to act like their doing something..
Plus there is a lot of nanny state types that just lap this stuff up, more rules and regulations yay! How many urban parents are probably like "good i would never buy a pellet gun for my kids!"

If someone was carrying one of these concealed, it would already be illegal under the criminal code due to concealing a weapon. Committing a robbery with one of these was also already committing a robbery with a firearm.
This very much seems like it's written by people who don't know the law, to sound good to people who don't know the law.

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Apr 28 '26
That's the entire point im making is the government in BC isn't doing anything but trying to pander to its base and act like they are making "ground breaking" changes, nothing they are doing isn't already already covered by the criminal code.

Where in federal law does it prevent charging illegal transportation of firearms by boat?
I'm confused by where these gaps are.
-1
u/Evilstib Apr 27 '26
Do you know where in Federal law it allows for charging for illegal transportation by boat?
4
u/gamercast1337 Apr 28 '26
So instead of charging a criminal with 10 crimes and still walk, they can charge them with 20 crimes and still walk. And gives the added bonus of being able to make law abiding people's lives more difficult!

u/Evilstib Apr 28 '26
Did you read the article?
3
u/willysnax Apr 28 '26
I did and it does nothing for filling in any gaps in illegal transportaion or storage. Once again, if they'd enforce the exisiting laws and have the punishment stick with some teeth they wouldn't need to keep adding these poser bills that won't make one bit of difference to criminals.
Did YOU read the article? Do you have your PAL/RPAL? Do you know all the safety measures and laws involved already?
T As others have said, this is pretty much just a ban on pellet guns to a degree. And again, you already could be charged for using one in a crime or having it concealed so another nothing bill for stopping crime.

- Yes.
- Yes and Yes.
- Know the ones relevant to me.
- Have a hard time believing that BC is creating laws that already exist federally, but also don’t feel the need to engage enough to research. But also, dumber shit has happened.

Yeah, he did this too with repeat offenders. Rolled out some pie in the sky program that was going to "deal with it" and "make communities safer".
It was basically a social program pretending to be a deterrent.
It didn't force the courts to do anything different. It was the equivalent of a strongly worded letter.
I've been dealing with this for years at the street level as a police officer. Until there is serious judicial reform and accountability; nothing will change.

- prohibiting the sale of low-velocity and imitation firearms to youth
We're saved!!!
When will they ban nerf guns?
And while we're at it, don't they know that the "experts" said lightsabers encourage knife violence? So they should ban that too
19
u/ThePoeticJester Apr 27 '26
We know where the guns are coming from but they refuse to tighten the border
14
u/Hopeful_Relation_441 Apr 27 '26
adding Chaos and not going after criminals pushes their agenda,, public will crave draconian measure for "public safety"
7
u/ThePoeticJester Apr 27 '26
Dont forget taking guns away from licensed owners 🙄🫤
You did nothing wrong? We take your shit and treat you like a criminal. You bring in guns and drugs? Nah no biggie, bail right away and when you do goto court we will just give you house arrest or some slap of the wrist

This why nothing ever change.
The act, the first of its kind in Canada, will help disrupt organized crime activity by providing additional tools for law enforcement that will fill existing gaps in federal law related to the misuse of firearms. While the legislation was created and passed before the extortion crisis, the legislation gives police new regulations to hold criminals accountable for offences that typically occur during criminal activities tied to extortion. These include:
discharging firearms from a vehicle (ref 1)
operating a vehicle that is illegally transporting a firearm – a firearm is being illegally transported if no one in the vehicle has the federal licences and authorizations to possess the firearm or if the firearm is not being transported in accordance to federal law (ref 2)
using or storing firearms in an unsafe manner (ref 3)
causing a public disturbance with low-velocity firearms or imitation firearms and possessing firearms or immitation firearms if subject to federal prohibition (ref 4)
possessing a firearm or imitation firearm in or on designated property (ref 5)
Having a loaded firearm in a vehicle is already an offence.
Possession of a firearm without a PAL is already an offence
Unlawfull storage is already a thing.
DUPLICATING EXISTING LAWS WONT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF YOU GIVE THEM A SLAP ON THE WRIST WHEN CAUGHT AND LET THEN THEM OFF ALMOST FREE.

Possessing low velocity firearms if subject to federal prohibition
Wow. Making it illegal to have low velocity firearms is about the only thing that a firearms prohibition does to a person that doesn't have a PAL, and the province thought they had to close that "gap"?

u/Elbro_16 Apr 27 '26
They banned air guns and airsoft for kids??? I was 14 when my parents let me go to Canadian tire and buy a break action pellet gun. That’s unfortunate

"We at the Government are serious about crimes. With this new act we've made things that are already illegal, double illegal. Also increased taxes 20% to enforce the double illegal crimes. Punishment? Oh no, that's an ism of some kind, we cant talk about that"

Lawyer Runkle of the Bailey has recently released a video that breaks down further how these changes can affect BC gun owners.
Goes into detail how this will affect going to the gun range. He explains that we will have to log personal details every time we and guests shoot at the range such as personal address.
How care providers are no longer expected to keep confidentiality and can report you if your ownership could lead to harm.

This is basically just a pellet gun ban on people under 18. Lame, they should put more effort into cross border smuggling and deportation if they want to actually stop extortion and illegal firearms.
